The image of chickens free ranging up to the back porch is such a dream for me!

They don't stop at the porch. They climb up on the deck, chairs, table...poop all over everything, and eat the cat food.

Ron, when is King Feed coming to Davis or somewhere that's a reasonable drive for me?

There is a cabinet incubator on CL right now. Its tempting, but id have to find a local processor for all thse roos first, I'm not driving 2 hrs with 200 chickens in the car....

Its a tempting thought, there is no one selling local chicken around at the farmers markets, but I think it might make us all go insane here. This house isnt THAT big!

love my GQF that I got on CL. now i just need a hatcher. As it is I have to group things together on what I can easily tell apart at hatch and my favorite eggs or most valuable always get the priority hovabator hatch. love hatching in that. I am actually considering buying another one....ooops, did I say that out loud.

Wow that's a lot of chicks!! Sounds like you may have a problem. Haha I can't wait to experience my first hatch.. I hope it's not too addicting

you should hear the grief i get form friends when telling them I went to a chicken gathering. hysterical what they say. josiah is asking about those eggs everyday. he'll be excited to candle next week.

Yup, after the second bout of pressure washing everything on the front and back porch, the group was sent back to the chicken yard. They are perfectly content pooping on everything out there.

All I live by is Nutrena and Purina. I used 18% All Flock, and when a fair comes around... all the all flock has run out at the feedstore. Did people just remember to start feeding their chickens?

I feed the babies Purnia, also my OEGB's because their beaks couldn't fit pellets in.

I don't know but I see people buying 10+ bags of scratch at a time and nothing else from Tractor Supply a lot. I sometimes wonder if they have hundreds of birds and that is their 'twinkie' run for the chickens or if that is all some people feed their chickens most of the time.

So I got the final necropsy results back from UC Davis. It looks like they suspect mycoplasma, but the tests were negative. I called & left a message with the case coordinator.
One of the quarantined birds was showing the same symptoms this morning - gurgly sounds while breathing & generally lethargic. I went ahead & culled it.
All the others look & act healthy. What do you guys think - should I cull the rest of these birds?

negative.

The histologic changes in the trachea are suggestive of a subacute to chronic infectious process and mycoplasma would be the
most likely etiology, but in this case the PCR tests for the two common pathogenic species of mycoplasma in poultry were

Histologic examinations were performed on samples of peripheral nerve, trachea, lung, heart, liver, kidney, spleen, bursa,
crop, proventriculus, ventriculus, small intestine, pancreas, cecum and skeletal muscle. The tissues are in fair
post-mortem condition with more substantial autolysis in the intestinal sections. Significant histologic lesions will be
summarized. In the two sections of trachea examined, there is diffuse mucosal infiltrate consisting of lymphocytes ,
plasma cells, admixed with histiocytic cells and there is formation of lymphoid follicles within the lamina propria of the
mucosa. The lung is histologically unremarkable. The only other abnormalities noted was that in the duodenum and
jejunum, there is widespread multifocal crypt necrosis with pleocellular inflammation likely related to the roundworm
infection (larvae migration), although no larval forms were identified within the lesion.

LOL it's quite a treck to my back porch from the coop. They would need to love to walk (quite a distance) to come up to the big house. Then walk up like 8- 10 stairs on top of it. I would be impressed if this happened lol.

You can mix ultra kibble with scratch. The claim is that this makes a complete food for them. For layers you add free choice calcium.

If I buy my already complete chicken feed for $22.00 per 50 pounds, it does not save me enough to do the ultra kibble with scratch mix thing.

I am trying to come up with my own 'scratch mix' that doesn't contain corn. I have oats so far. Any other wholesome grains that are fairly easy to obtain? Since they will stay in their coop run for a few weeks (babies are far too little for me to feel ok about letting them out freely on 2-4 acres) as they get bigger- I like giving them something to peck at. I do toss in veggie and fruit bits and oats right now. Would the wheat need to be cracked or something? I suppose I could buy whole grains and crack them in my little flour mill?

They have Chicken wheat. It does not need to be cracked. It's fairly high in protein. The King Feed I am getting has Wheat in it instead of corn.
