You should figure on getting 50 to 60% in the winter and 80 to 90% in the spring to summer. Sometimes more and sometimes less.

When you don't have enough, keep a list and fill the orders in order off of it. Eggs have a way of building up and often people don't want eggs at an equivalent rate.

I had to hard boil a dozen today--was working on my seventh dozen in the fridge. My oldest thinks we need a fridge just of the eggs and a freezer just for the ones in freezer camp

I still have 7 pullets that have not started laying yet for the layer flock.

Thanks Ron. Very helpful! I am going to keep an egg journal between my ducks and hens. I won't see 'who' is laying what eggs usually but the numbers will be fairly even between females of each bird. I am going to record all the eggs I get from the duck hens and chicken hens separately. I earnestly want to see who is the heavy producer. In my duck flock they are all hatchery quality ducks and only 2 of them are hybrid layers. The rest are straight breeds of their kind. The EE I get from you will be my only 'bred to lay layers'. The rest of my chicken flock are all heritage breeds. So I think it's a pretty fair comparison overall.

I guess it depends on the size of the pebbles. My chicks are on dirt with play sand on top to keep them clean. All of my chicken pens are soft dirt so I offer all my chickens grit. They eat it up so they must need it.

I love this idea! All my chicks are 4+ weeks old. So they are fine for the bigger stuff. They are on dirt right now that has lots of pebbles in it...do I still need to offer grit?

I bought these two EEs to help my poor lonely GLW(Golden Laced Wyandotte) company. They are a couple of weeks older than her, so they are about 8 weeks old.

They are really starting to get some color.



In this picture you can see the muffs starting to grow in:




I had to get a picture of the GLW feeling better. She has already started looking less ugly and will be 7 weeks old on Saturday. If I keep calling the GLW a her maybe it will be true

OK, wow, my first major multi quote. Here goes....
They are in priority rack number one. I swear my best hatches have been when i have more eggs in my GQF. But they will get to hatch in the hovabator so I can watch every second. that's where I hatch my favorites...much easier to check the progress. This last hatch was around 80% and that was with two batches of shipped eggs. My shipped brahmas hatched 31/39. One of my best hatch rates for shipped eggs. I am looking forward to candling in a week to check the progress!
seriously! Well all the kids were given the feeding and watering lesson this morning so they are gonna be much more active in the actual care of the chickens. We will see if they still love it! ;-)
love my GQF that I got on CL. now i just need a hatcher. As it is I have to group things together on what I can easily tell apart at hatch and my favorite eggs or most valuable always get the priority hovabator hatch. love hatching in that. I am actually considering buying another one....ooops, did I say that out loud.
Some things I hatch just to sell because they are easy to move. That helps pay for some of the eggs I really want. I did just process about 10 roos. And, will keep doing that as needed. I also have 5.5 acres and 10 breeding pens set up with another 5 smaller pens when I want to be able to figure something out. I just keep building but I want to have space ultimately to really be able to develop good stock for the breeds that I end up deciding to invest in for the longer haul. exciting and new...
you should hear the grief i get form friends when telling them I went to a chicken gathering. hysterical what they say. josiah is asking about those eggs everyday. he'll be excited to candle next week.
was gonna say the same thing Cheryl and Shannon ( I don't think shannon are ready to sell as they are younger but probably starting to lay soon.) they are direct from Cheryl. could have got some as they were one of the raffle items at the chicken stock!

great I need to contact her. I am planning on trying to cross with a wheaten pene then breed it back and see what I get..

I don't know but I see people buying 10+ bags of scratch at a time and nothing else from Tractor Supply a lot. I sometimes wonder if they have hundreds of birds and that is their 'twinkie' run for the chickens or if that is all some people feed their chickens most of the time.

Scratch is like Twinkies, there is no nutritional value really, but it does make Jersey Giants feet more yellow.

I just give it as a treat.

Awwww they are so pretty! (so is your GLW- so you think she is a he? it looks like a she but i think i am used to these huge marans combs too! haha) The kids are even more excited to get the EEs now!
