California - Northern

ok, as long as we're sharing pictures, i have a few from this morning -- it was both misty and sunny, making for nice light:

the two marans, dixie and ethel, looking for bugs:

the new girls, frances and bella, who totally boss everyone else around:

dixie working the drinking fountain, daisy (whose head feathers STILL haven't come in, at 8-9 week, although they're getting better) heading for the yogurt, lucy pecking in the background:

a wild turkey wanders by! (there were actually four others who ran away when i moved)

everyone ignoring my cat henry:

waiting expectantly for treats:

and making friends (or, checking to make sure there are no more treats):

Fun! They are so cute! And what a beautiful place they're located at!

In some breeds, slower feathering is desired.  Like heritage BR's, the slower they feather, the better the barring.  I have an English Orp that feathered in so slowly that not only did I and a bunch of others think she was a male, but she got nicknamed Ostrich.

I wouldn't worry about culling for slow feathering.  She may fill in more beautiful than the others.

She went from this (this was after she feathered in some - her back is still bare and no tail, bare neck/chest too):

This is her sister at the same age, roughly 3 months:

And this is what she looks like now:

Can you believe a hawk tried to grab her yesterday?  All it got was a bunch of feathers.

She's gorgeous! Those feathers.. Wow!!

we (me, the cats, & the chicklets) are definitely lucky to have found this place last year, i'm still pinching myself -- and i gave them a new layer of pine shavings in their henhouse this afternoon (just swept the old stuff down into the run, so handy), so it's even tidy at this point. and they LOVE the oak branches that are scattered around, both as perches & as things to peck at/hide behind/snooze under.

right now everyone is either dust-bathing or napping (or possibly both!) -- all is well on a friday afternoon. it's kind of amazing that i just got the first pullets, and started building the coop, three weeks ago! we've come a long way quickly.

Jeff your set up is AWEsome! Thanks for sharing your pictures!!
thanks much!!

I'll definitely let you know! Johnny and I are trying to figure out how many we can keep. We're trying to locate someone who will rent us some land for the chickens. I'd like to have my layers at home and my breeders close by on a seperate property. We have a good sized yard but are only allowed 12 chickens on the property. Hopefully we can find something and get it all set up.

WOW!! That looks awesome! What a great setup.. and lots of room! How many chickens do you have?
Ok, sounds good!

and to answer your question about the number. embarassingly, ... I have absolutely no idea!!!!!!!!! People ask me all the time.

There are at least 200 with chicks included. I am guessing between 225 and 275. I do have plans of counting in the next few days because it's time to change bands on my chickens that are close to full size. It's official, I am the chicken version of the infamous "cat lady"!
