Man I just don't know what the heck. I don't go to other people's houses that have birds. No one who has birds has been since my first batch was like 3 weeks old. That has been more than 6 weeks ago. No new birds except (all from the same breeder) I did add 16 week old pullets a few weeks ago- but they were from the same breeder. Buff Orpingtons which I already some younger ones from her that I got as week olds. What am I doing?? Is this normal? Clean waterers every single say. Fresh food. Misters to keep them cool. I don't get it.

I still think it is Cocci and Copper showed the symptoms first. If it is Cocci, Corid in the water will perk them up quickly. It is a 5 to 7 day treatment.

I am wishing the best for you!

Ron
Ok is this something I should run out now and drag my raggedy head kids to TS to get or can I wait until 530 when someone gets home to watch the kids? I am going to research this. Man this is so stressful! Should I let her die or speed it up? She is just laying there with her eyes closed breathing softly- not moving.

maybe this is just a new-to-chickens dumb question, but doesn't the chickens' dustbathing kill off lice and etc? do they need to be medicated?

best,
laura

Hi Laura,

I sometimes have trouble quoting from your posts so will do it this way!

Dust bathing helps with lice but won't get rid of a heavy infestation. Mites do not live on the chickens. They live in the coop and come out at night to feed on the chickens. Dust bathing will not control mites.

Fleas jump on and jump off and part of there life cycle is to pupate in the dirt.

I have seen people set up a kiddy sand box for dust bathing. DE is added to the mix in the sand box.

Bye,

Ron

If I treat them all- should I treat the EE's, Ron, and then put them all together in the coop? I am just unsure what to do with that part. The EE's seem pretty darn healthy. If they carry a different strain of Cocci- if I treat my flock, then let the EE's in could they (my flock) technically pick up the cocci the EEs had? And vice versa? Would it be safer to treat them and toss them together while they are being treated at once?

thanks! and funny, i seem to be having trouble doing multi-quotes... perhaps there's something a bit off about my account somehow.

sorry forgot to say that Yellow Rose Ranch is in roseville area. I used them once a few months back when I had some eggs come out of sync with other eggs and I needed to incubate about a dozen eggs.
BigDaddysMom, I live in Newcastle.. I have room in my incubator if you still havn't found anyone. Molly

Hey everyone! :D Just taking a break from coop building! I wanted to update on how my first incubation is going. I set my eggs yesterday morning around 2:00am. I set 17 eggs. My hens are RIR and GSL and the roo is Ron's Dorking/Americuana he gifted me a month or so back Hens... Drae'... Heres the bator... its been holding around 99.8F- 101.9F and my room humidty in the high 30's im doing the dry incubation method so this is ideal room humidty correctk? I have 6x thermometers. 2 digital hygrometers and 4 of the regular thermometers including the one it came with I'm not really hoping for a high hatch rate, just want to make sure my setting are correct and I'm getting development. I'm buying Basque eggs from Mrs. Fluffy this week so I need to practice some. any tips from the pros?? Have a cool afternoon! ;)

Hi Amy Beth!

I would not treat the EEs. Watch them for signs but they will probably be fine.

Treat all of the others and good luck!

Ron

Ahhh does this mean I have to close my flock permanently? How in the world can people keep their chickens completely disease free? Is it even possible? I have had zero issues with my ducks and I've had them longer. :(

You are doing a great job with them!

Cocci is in the dirt and comes from wild birds too.

To answer your other post, yes go to TSC and get the corid now. Get the listless one to drink some and keep giving her some several times a day until she starts perking up. Those baby vitamins without iron should help too.

Ron
