Ahhh does this mean I have to close my flock permanently? How in the world can people keep their chickens completely disease free? Is it even possible? I have had zero issues with my ducks and I've had them longer. :(
No, Cocci is every where and chickens build a resistance to it as they get older. That is why the 6-11 week age is critical for Cocci. You may need to give them medicated feed longer.

If it were a contagious virus that is always present then you would have to close the flock.

Bye,

Ok, I had to reband some of my chickens, so I finally have a rough count of my chickens. I have at least 250 from chick to layers up in redding. I didn't count my current hatchlings which are pipping and popping and jumping out of their shells for the next few days. Over 120 eggs when into lockdown. when I left yesterday, the first ones had started and there were about 15 hatched. so by the end of the weekend I will likely have over 350 chickens!!! the nice thing is that my grow out pen chickens are starting to feather out and I am beginning to see which ones I will keep for breeding and then will hopefully be able to sell off some of the excess in a month or so. AND, two weeks away from incubating my first eggs. I will have the cream legbars first and the jubilees should start laying any day now. I've kept them separated so once she lays I will have pure eggs from her.

Exciting!
Happy Thursday to all!
OMG, you sound like me... What the heck are we doing...

Just taking a break from coop building! I wanted to update on how my first incubation is going.

I set my eggs yesterday morning around 2:00am. I set 17 eggs. My hens are RIR and GSL and the roo is Ron's Dorking/Americuana he gifted me a month or so back

Hens...

Drae'...

Heres the bator...
its been holding around 99.8F- 101.9F and my room humidty in the high 30's im doing the dry incubation method so this is ideal room humidty correctk?

I have 6x thermometers. 2 digital hygrometers and 4 of the regular thermometers including the one it came with

I'm not really hoping for a high hatch rate, just want to make sure my setting are correct and I'm getting development.
I'm buying Basque eggs from Mrs. Fluffy this week so I need to practice some.

any tips from the pros??

Have a cool afternoon!

Is it a still air?

With those, you average the temp between the top and the bottom to 99.5. There should be a thermometer at the bottom of the eggs and one at the top. So, 99 at the bottom and 100.5 at the top?

Ok should I also pick up some medicated starter too?

Thank You Jules!

The only quail I have eaten is Valley Quail. I did buy quail eggs from an Hispanic store once. They were kind of fun.

My daughters want me to hatch some but now I don't think I want to.

What about Pheasants?

Ron
Cots taste a lot like Turkey to me. Not wild or gamey. But I don't like wild and gamey, so I was happy! and OMG people REALLY? 12 pages from last night??????? I'm never going to catch up!

Now back to reading....

Nice! Yea I have the still air.Yep I have those fishtank thermometers, one on top of the eggs, and like wedged in between them. So 101F is to high?

Quote: I keep saying the same thing! Then I say, if I have a separate coop/run for each breed, if I get rid of a breed, it will give me more options for the breeds I keep. But how do you decide what breeds to get rid of? They are like popcorn............................."Oh look, a chicken!"

I have taken so many photos of chickens in my travels, a naked neck deep in the jungle at a village in Panama, dozens of feral chickens on Kaui, etc, etc, etc.! They are all just so appealing.

And yes, I do spend a lot of money on my chickens. They are one of my hobbies and I don't really expect to recoup those monies. We have the advantage of being retired and nothing to spend on other than our hobbies.
