Guess who is alert today and took many sips of water in her own??? Hope did! I've been praying for my little Hope chicken. I hope she keeps drinking! I haven't been able to get her to drink anything in 24 hrs. She would let the water dribble out of i tried. Her guts are making all kinds of noises. Poor sweet thing. Now she actually looks at me at me and will follow movement.

hooray!!! excellent news!

we celebrated here by adding a few more twisty oak branches to the girls' run -- they LOVE to perch, even just a few inches above the ground, and some of the twisty ones give them lots of different heights.

also discovered that the leftover lentil salad that i cannot possibly eat all of, is very popular with the feathered folk -- although chunks of carrot confuse them, they are attracted to the color but then can't bite through...

I am still trying to be reserved. things can always change. But when I came in this morning I saw her breathing and felt side. I said good morning chicken- and she lifted her head and looked at me. She hasn't done that since I found her. So I tipped the bowl under beak and she kept moving her beak and taking teeny sips. Also something she hasn't done since I found her. So I am hopeful that Hope can pull through. Offered her some egg but she isn't interested yet. I will offer some more water with corid and the electrolytes/vitamins/probiotics. That Rooster Booster is the BEST stuff I have been able to find. It has vitamins (no iron), electrolytes AND the good stuff that is in yogurt- all in one container.

I have Nutri-drench...has iron. :/ ND doesn't have electrolytes nor probiotics in it- you have to buy separate products to get all that.

Copper is doing wonderful right now. Gobbled up some egg- he gets wet mash for dinner. Nervous about giving him 'real' chicken food. It is going to force his crop to work for the first in days.

haha! Poor chickens! Mine stared at strawberry for a really long time. Totally unsure of what to do with it. Chickens are funny. Mine love love love tomatoes. Love. (I love lentils too!)

I don't see it listed on mine?) look in the ingredient listing- not the upper part where the vitamin efficiency is. smell it - it smells just like the iron my sister had to take for anemia. bleh. and it's dark like it. see it says iron sulfate in the ingredients?

So far I have Vetericyn eye drops and spray, Corid, Rooster Booster powder (it has multi vitamins, electrolytes AND lactobacillus), Nutri-drench, sterile syringes of various sizes (and needles), Neosporin (generic is cheaper. without pain reliever of course), Ivermectin, Duramycin...I need: a scalpel, large tweezers (like really large), small tweezers, sharp scissors (for trimming feathers etc), some wound wrap bandages...I'm missing a lot. Dedicated needle and thread for stitches.

Chiqita, I have been thinking along similar lines, but a chicken emergency kit is a great idea! It's good to be prepared, which is why I read this thread consistently. Learn something new every day! I'm going to look for the Rooster Booster that Amy Beth mentioned.

Calf Manna, Sunflower Seeds, Corn, Kitten Food, anything chickens might need.

Is the Calf Manna in pellet form? I'm thinking about switching to a pelleted layer food. Do the chickens have trouble adjusting? Seems like my girls will pick up and test just about everything!

The word you're looking for is Poly-Vi-Sol, it's made by Enfamil. I bought some last week at Walgreens. It was with all the other vitamins, in the section for babies/children. They had with/without iron, and several other liquid vitamin choices, such as Vit D, a combo, and a couple of others. I forget which. The Poly-Vi-Sol was $10.49.

I like to keep a package of pipe cleaners. If you have to make a hobble for spraddle leg/etc, they work great to reinforce the tape between their legs. Sometimes depending on the angle you're trying to achieve, you need a brace. This was the case with a chick who's hocks were pinched in, I needed to separate them. I cut a piece of pipe cleaner the length I wanted the spread. I thought of it by picturing babies I've seen that had to be casted to correct a leg problem, they put a bar for support in the cast.

Also, for hatching, sometimes you have a chick that needs a little assistance. I keep a very sharp pair of tweezers and a box of q-tips. Sometimes just running the q-tip under the chicks chin will allow it's head to pop free from the shell. They can then usually finish hatching on their own. I only help if I think they have been at it WAY too many hours and are most likely stuck.
