California - Northern

Hi. I just wanted to say Hello. I am new here and was told this was where people from my neck of the woods are. I am in west marin. Right now in the san geronimo valley but i hope to move to point reyes or inverness in the next year and I am waiting ntil after that move to get some chickens. I like to learn as much as I can in advance though so I am reading up. I had 1 chicken when I was a teenager and she was very much a lap chicken. I have wanted to have more chickens ever since.

hi swarm, i live in sonoma county but do most of my research (I teach at SSU) about Point Reyes, so am out there fairly often. also a relatively newcomer here, and have had my first (and growing!) flock for a few months now.
welcome!

I was out taking pictures today, here are some pictures from my New Hampshire pen.

Archie (the main man - he is the one that went Champion American at the State Fair)

 Archie and my backup boy

 One of the pullets

I love the way these guys glow in the sunlight.

More pictures tomorrow from the SPPR, Icelandic & Iowa Blue pens...

Deb

See, now I'm NOT tempted because mine wont look like hers.... but mebby I could get hers... arrg! Welcome swarm! I Live In San Jose but do a lot of my work in Marin, its a lovely place. The turkeys are in the "explore the entire office and poop on it" stage and like all poultry love my keyboard. So if my typing gets worse, its not my fault!

Zoo, you saved another chick today! I saw a puffed up quail last night, force fed him some sulfed ( or however you spell it) and he looks better today, all the quail are getting it in their water today. DH is researching if he can give their poop to his BSF. We have been getting between 20 and 100 a day, they chickens are LOVING them. My 2 buff orphingtons are addicted, they follow him around whenever he is out crying for grubs. Dolly doesn't even offer then to her chicks anymore! Hard to tell if they are affecting the feed bill, but the eggs are looking awesome again, and I know live food is better food.

Its is cloudy here today, weather said possible thunderstorms this week, that would be SOOOO awesome! Ron, I didn't know there were 2 types of the ecoglows. What is the difference between the advanced and the reg? This one can be set for different chick heights but not different temps.

Deb, I am getting roux and scarlett quail eggs this week, you'll have to add more colors to your flock !

We love Point Reyes. They have one of the rare horse campgrounds in CA where they have corrals for your horses (although we primitive camp and our horses are use to high lines) and places for your travel trailer. We spent a week there with our kids and horses and had so much fun riding the mountains and in the ocean! A favorite trip of our family.

Laura, what do you teach? Are you a marine biologist? My husband still wishes he would have pursued that. He always said he wanted to do that....but we live in the mountains and didn't want to move.

I studied biology for my undergrad degree (senior project was on viper evolution, so i was more of a herpetologist than a marine biologist), but am now a social scientist -- teach environmental history, environmental policy, environmental planning, etc. here's the "real me" (except i'm now assoc. prof, got tenure this summer):

my research at Point Reyes is basically an environmental history about how land management has changed the place since it became a park -- currently working on turning it into a book manuscript...

Yes, I need to take three Heritage RIR Cockerels there. I will hold onto the GLW since It might be a pullet.

Can you take Corwin along with the piggie? If not, I can get him on Friday evening.

I will get there close to 8:00 this time. Last time I got there way too late.

Ron

So, we are going to meet there? I can bring Corwin. Getting there at 8:00 is going to be a challenge, unless I can get DH to do my chores for me. Can you give me the address again and tell me a little about what it was like? I have no idea about this type of thing...feel kinda strange showing up somewhere I've never been...with a pig. You can email me if no one else is interested in the Animal Exchange.

Congrats on the tenure! The book would be amazing, would love to read it, please let us know when it's published! You have a very interesting job Miss Smarty Pants!

aw thanks -- i'll have a short essay in this week's West Marin Citizen, in case of interest... commenting on the whole crazy Drakes Bay Oyster Co. controversy.
