not sure when I will start having any chicks but hopefully they will start laying again soon. and I really just have a pair that will work for the MF coloring. one of the pullets is black and white so she'll just go to my layer pen. I know that shannon put a few eggs in the incubator before selling to me and they made it to lockdown
I'm in no hurry lol... I dont even have the wheatens yet

my four-week-olds had their first night outdoors in the exclosure pen (with a nesting box to sleep in), and this morning they're all bouncing around and looking fine. such a relief to have them out of the house! and the big girls are giving them stern looks through the wire, but hopefully they'll all get accustomed to each other over the next week or two.
I had a 3 week old outside in the garage. seems to do ok. Open ghe garage in the day and close it at night. He is by the front so they get plenty of light

these kids are in a wire enclosure within the run of the chicken coop -- so the big girls still have the henhouse to themselves, and the little kids slept in a warm pile inside their nesting box. and the house is MUCH quieter -- i still have the two new arrivals, roughly 2 weeks old, in the brooder, but they're much calmer than the gang that preceded them!

I am sending well wishes prayers to Meg2000000 and her Boyfriend(not fiance...)Johnny.

Johnny broke his leg last week and had surgery to fix the break.

Get well soon Johnny!

Truly the most amazing creatures....................you'd think they would populate the earth.

Forty-two days after hatching....................................FIRST EGG!

I knew I was close, the boys have been crowing and chasing the girls around trying to breed for a little over a week now.

Well shoot, one of my new Marans chick isn't doing well. It's about half the size of the others (they're about 2 weeks) and I noticed yesterday morning, when they all got out of the brooder that there was a loose poo (the right color but just loose) and this one was lagging behind a bit. They were out all day yesterday and I brought them in again last night to keep them warm (didn't work out with the broody, I'll post about that later), but this morning I noticed this little one seemed to be less active. She is eating and drinking (I put vitamins and electrolytes in the water) but when I took them outside the others ran off to forage but this one stood there peeping loudly. I took it closer to its buds and it was walking like a drunk. I fed the rest of the animals but when I checked again it was keeping up with the group but you could see it was having a hard time. I brought it in the house and have it in my shirt because it was crying for its buddies.......and I hear clicking when it breaths. Not sure if it's just because it just drank or if its a respiratory thing. It's finally quieted down but still peeping on and off.

Any ideas whats wrong and suggestions on what to do? I'm going to get some Polyvisol (w/o iron) but should I start antibiotics?

Posted this on the Nevadans? thread too, looking for advice, so sorry for the double post if anyone else reads both threads

Coturnix quail.

Incubation is only around 16 days and six weeks later you have eggs. And they are such friendly little creatures. My Bobwhite quail are crazy and mad as hatters. They take 5-6 mos to mature, the same as a chicken and incubation is 23-24 eggs.

Go with the Japanese (Coturnix).
