California - Northern

Thanks Ron.
I thought what I did WAS quarantine, but I guess sometimes you just can't dodge the bullet.
They don't have Any sneezing or rattling I can hear. I just went and listened .
Which ointment should I pick up? Should I goes to Hawes Ranch or another feed store?
I have to read up on this conjunctivitis. I do use DLM. I don't see any other symptoms other than the red eyes at the moment. And its been a few weeks since I first noticed on the blue orp. How could they get Vit A def? I feed Organic pride starter and it has Vit A supplement. Wow this is boggling. Lol
I don't have a permanent quarantine area for big birds yet other than a hoop coop that is housing some more blue Orps feom the same deal. I do need to set up appermanent spot though. The chicks were pretty much new borns when I got em .so I put them in with my new borns. Thankfully I haven't sewn any symptoms on my chicks yet.
Thank you Amy for your help. I know you have been dealing with soo much lately. Your gonna be a guru by next year lol. I wish I knew more sometimes so I could help you out too. But I do read and learn.
Thank you EVERYONE for the help. I don't think I can say that enough.
Hopefully tomorrow we can get these chicks feeling better. So ill report back tomorrow.
I found this on Vit A. http://www.hobbyfarms.com/livestock-and-pets/vitamin-a-deficiency-in-chickens.aspx I guess you can get a drop or something? I wonder if the eye drops and a fresh coop help? I hope so! One thing I have learned so far- not to jump to the big stuff right away. I did that when I had a cockerel gasping for air. Thought he had a horrible virus and needed to cull him. Found plastic attached to the back of his tongue cutting off his airways. He was a day away from being culled. So separate them for sure, electrolytes in their water, drops for the eyes and a clean coop and just watch the rest of the flock and these guys to see if any new symptoms erupt. *fingers crossed* that this is a simple matter with a simple fix!

Thanks for that link. I switched them onto the medicated feed, that has more vitamin A than the organic feed and gave them some save-a-chick. So hopefully if it is a Vit A def those 2 things will help start correcting their vitamin levels.

What about rooster booster? I have some. Should I give them this just for good measures?

use sav a chick or rooster booster, not both. Does the same thing iirc. Should be electrolytes and vitamins.

I use only Rooster Booster personally. Mine has electrolytes and vitamins in it.

Hey Kim. Thanks a lot.

How could I get my chicks to eat any of that stuff?
Hi Mike,

I did not know if you had quarantined or not--just a general warning about quarantining for two weeks when you get new chickens.

Chickens love Kale, Grass and Alphalfa. Younger chickens will have trouble eating carrots, so you would need to shred them or cook them a bit(too much cooking will hurt the vitamins). fish oil--Maybe give them fish meal? To treat them, you can use a dropper and drop oil in their beaks.

I give my layers the grass clippings from my front lawn. I do not use poisons and only use organic fertilizer(

You know what that is right?) I also buy a bag of chopped kale and alternate that with half a cabbage each morning.

It must work, I hatched 9 chicks out of 10 eggs into lockdown. The 9th one hatched over night. They are in the Brooder now hanging out under the EcoGlow 20.

How are the sick ones today?

Ron

At the end of the article it said this
Vitamin A Deficiency Treatment
Treatment consists of changing the chicken’s feed and of supplementing feed with vitamin A at two to four times the normal level for two weeks. A water-soluble vitamin A supplement is available for ease of administration.

I assumed with chicks you would need a supplement (I could totally be wrong - I am no guru). So I would assume that it says water soluble supplement you could get it at the feed store or health food store. At our Tractor Supply I saw some various vitamin supplements (like E and some others).

I have the same stuff. How much do you mix with a gallon of water? They list some directions for 1 ounce per 16 gallons.

Yea I have them inside in a 50 gallon rubbermaid for now. I am gonna go to the store as soon as my brother wakes up. So I should get. Fish oil Kale Cabbage And them the eye ointment. Which ointment should I get? I do feed all my chickens greens and weeds from the garden. I only use organic nutrients here too. I use mainly Age Old Organics for all my gardens. I have put weeds and grasses in the brooder for them to eat but maybe just not high enough in Vit A. They look happy. Running and jumping at each other. That's never changed. Their energy levels have always been the same. Just those red puffy eyes. I gotta get this handled.

Definitely going to see what's all available at TSC and Hawes Ranch. Hopefully you are right. I hope so :D
