They can stay in there for 3 days. If there are no pips, you can take them out. the rule is to not open the incubator if there is a pip because the drop in humidity can glue the hole shut or make them stick. A trick is to get a paper towel wet and toss it in when you take out the chicks.
I came home to 5 hatched. The last three are Marans and they often take longer to hatch. I am not worried and will leave the chicks in there until the morning.

When is Dinner? Guy's Big Bite had a reicpe for Chicken Tika Massala this weekend. You marinated the chicken and then browned it on the BBQ. It was then Pressure cooked. That should work for an older Roo.So very frustrated. My icelandic rooster Curly got in with my crele penedesenca rooster and beat the snot out of him. Took many of the feathers off his head.
I think he is going to be ok. he is eating and drinking and I uped the save a chick. However I was so mad I promptly disposed of my icelandic rooster.
I have been trying to get rid of him and the rest of my icelandic's to focus on the penedesenca. Now I just have 3 icelandic hens and a younger rooster ( from Molly)
I will try and get some pic's of his head in a day or two but just want to let him relax the next few days

If there's no pips I'd grab the chicks and move them to the brooder but I'd give the others another day before I candled anyone. Congratulations on the 5!
lol.. so very frustrated. his skin is purple probably bruised. There is nothing left of the other rooster to cook. He died of lead poisining . I really liked him too just not as much.Your Welcome!

Amy, thanks for confirming. The breeder and I thought this is what you dealt with. The chicks were only about a week old when I got them and they were already infected, so it was nothing on my property. I have 20 some chicks of my running around here and they and my adult flock are all good (well except for all the molting going on).
The breeder thinks the e-coli came from poop on one of the eggs and they were infected in the incubator. The eggs were purchased from another respected BYC member so I'm not blaming anyone or think that things weren't managed properly, although everyone involved is going back and crossing their t's and dotting their i's to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.
I'm happy to know that I don't have to cull (and as always, when I say "I" I mean my husband). Since the e-coli is bacterial should I go ahead and treat them with an antibiotic before I move them to the grow out pen? If so, what type of antibiotic. I've never had to treat a sick chicken beyond Rooster Booster or an injury.

THANKS!
Hey Pam get em some Duramycin-10. I just dealt with this same issue. It's been working on my chicks.
I can't remember what page I posted on, a few days ago.
How many sick chicks do you have?
Mike
very pretty RonAs Promised, I am posting pictures of my Heritage RIR Pullets.
This picture shows what the fee are supposed to look like. The yellow with the orange -- you do not see that in the Hatchery RIRs. Also, A good look at the color you are supposed to have - dark Mahogany.
They are young and have more molting, but you can see the colors and pattern along with the straight back and beetle colored tail feathers. Also, the are supposed to be shaped like a brick.
Here is a nice group shot. They will be 16 weeks old tomorrow. They have another molt and then they should have better color and all of their tail feathers.

Quote: I have 4, I know someone posted a more reasonable dosing then the 12.5 gallons but my SIL is staying with us while she tries to settle marriage issues.... appears we got her in the divorceand she's on my computer so I can't search as easy on my phone. Could someone repost the smaller dosing?![]()
Jersey posted the dosage today but it looks like she removed it. There was a math formula and everything. she is a very good student.
I can't trust my memory all the time, but I think the dosage was a tablespoon per gallon.
Any body else know?
Ron
