Ok I just finished a chicken. Man I am slow. Took me about an hour for 1 chicken. I only had time to do one chicken lol. Question- this chicken leaked poop out of it's vent while I was trying to process it. Is this normal? This really weirded me out. I tried really hard to keep it from touching the rest of the chicken but dang man! Is my meat bad now? Please say no because that was a lot of work and I didn't do a totally horrible job. I weighed him dressed with his neck part, heart and gizzard (cleaned and butterflied) and I got 3.8 pounds dressed. Marans have ginormous bones so I know those weigh a lot!

Ok so help...poop coming out of the vent normal??

I've never dressed a chicken so I'm in the dark on all you have just done, but did you withhold food yesterday? Some of the other venders at our local growers market process their own birds and they always take the food away the day before.

Mine are free ranged. They have access to forage and they did get a handful of food tossed out. His crop was pretty empty. His gizzard had a small amount of feed but more grass and other unrecognizable things. Unfortunately I cannot withhold food too much because I am only able to process 1 a day.

When we got chickens 5? years ago we were just looking for eggs and we got hatchery birds. They are fine for eggs but with their small frames I don't think they would yield enough for all the effort. Besides most of them have names.

I may try some cornish x in the spring, they all look alike without the head.

It happens. Good job on processing! It will get faster

Let it rest in the fridge for a couple of days and brine it.

Oh wow. Brrrrrr...... We had heavy rain solid from 11 pm to about 7:30 this morning. It all soaked in, no run off and the ground isn't crunchy anymore.
Beautiful puffy clouds all day and tiny bit of sprinkles. About 52 degrees right now. Can't wait for the green!

It poured last night and rained very lightly on and off all day. Supposed to rain again Wednesday and then back to the 70's. We got just enough rain to know which areas need better drainage or protection. Nothing like waiting til the last minute.
