goodness, lots going on out there in this amazing weather! it was an unexpected day for me in ChickenLand -- posted some photos of what i thought were my two Cream Legbars to the CL thread here on BYC this morning:

speedy (in foreground) and amelia

amelia

but someone on the list thought amelia didn't look like a CL -- so I pm'd Deann, who i got her from as a day-old chick, and she agreed -- much more likely to be one of her CL/penedensca crosses (trying to make an olive-egger!) who got mixed up in the hatch. i suppose that explains why these two look fairly different!

but Deann was INCREDIBLY kind and generous and offered a CL pullet of the same age as a replacement -- plus I bought an extra basque pullet from her, so the new CL wouldn't be lonely as she integrates into my flock. so funny, that i just sold Baby the basque cockerel on friday, along with the isbar cockerel, and now two days later they're unexpectedly replaced by two pullets! SO wonderfully delighted -- here are the new girls:

the new CL, amazingly friendly and sweet -- I'm thinking of calling her Lucy Two, in honor of my sweet delaware pullet who passed away earlier this summer

and the new basque pullet, on the left, sizing up her likely sibling/cousin eleanor (who came from the same breeder) -- I think she'll be called maggie

all of the younger flock together -- two basques, two CLs, and the CL/penedensca mix

the big girls are not entirely welcoming to the newcomers, so i've put them in a separate enclosure for a few days at least...

and finally, the big girls enjoying the warm weather by roaming far and wide!

thank you Deann!! the new birds are so lovely!!!
Amelia is amazing. She is A Crele Penedesenca x Cream Legbar cross. Classic Penedesenca tail and form. Lovely. Deann mentioned the chicks look just like legbar chicks.
You should get a Green or Olive egg. She should be alert like a penedesenca and very active. Congrats

you have some amazing looking Chickens there.

So I am mentally at a happy place to get rid of our favorite BCM cockerel, Samson. He has long been a family 'fave'. But we decided to go rid of him. I am craigslisting him soon. Hoping to see some more feathering on him to help make him look more impressive. ;) And we are keeping our last remaining Buff Orp cockerel to cover my Buff ladies. I have a black barnyard mix cockerel and 2 other bcm cockerels to cull. However. One cockerel is so darn adorable. He is our Charlotte. Well mine. I'll be darned if he doesn't behave like a PET. Whenever he sees me, he runs up to me and whenever I walk around the yard (I could walk well over a 100 feet away from his usual spots) and that sucker follows me around like a dog purring. Purring. What kind of a chicken is he? I do not hang out with the extra cockerels. I give them their food and that's pretty much that. They do get to free range while they wait to meet their uhh maker. lol Even my husband saw him doing this and was laughing and remarking how funny that was. I can tell he is behind me by the odd purring noise he makes- I don't even have to see him to know it's him. None of the other chickens or roosters do this. Just him. Has anyone ever kept a 'pet' rooster just because they had so much personality? I don't think I can kill this one. The others no problem but this one is funny. :|

Welcome Redchicken, congrats on all the egg swapping and fall cleaning going on with everyone!
I've been working like crazy to get my store ready for Christmas and train two new girls to manage the store and wine bar during the towns Christmas preview.....while I'm in Hawaii!!!!
I had to fire one employee and its harder then you think to get good help, then my other employee had an old injury flare up and she's out for the season, just as I'm finally getting my first vacation in 2 years!
So let the cards fall where they will and I pray customers are patient and understanding....
On a good note, here's the two remaining Blue Marans. They actually came into the Polish pen where I was sitting and pooped and pecked all around me. Maybe they'll be friendly after all.

Yay for vacay! I hope you have a great time. Love those marans!

Congrats Lawatt! I have a few that look like her too.

Hey Jason. what's the market like for icelandics? If they sell I might be interested in breeding them.
I think it is pretty good. They are very rare and do need help. The nice thing is they always look different do not eat much and our good foragers. I would like to keep them but need the space and know there are a few good breeders around here of them when I want to start up again. I am just wanting to devote all my energy to my Penedesenca . I am letting the quad go for 35.00 to anyone on here. that gets a really nice looking and mellow rooster and 3 hens. the one lays a thin egg. it is getting better now that I am giving her more oyster shells but dont think I would try and hatch any eggs from her. I would keep her but not sure which one is doing it.
