California - Northern

I just bought tickets tonight to see Trans Siberian Orchestra

The concert is ON my DH's birthday, so I'm surprising him with the tickets. I can't wait.

I know this isn't chicken related, but since it's a surprise, I didn't have anyone else to share my excitement at the moment.

My hatch is done - 9 out of 10 hatched. I thought the last one was a late quitter. I candled it and it had not pipped internally, didn't see movement. So I went to do an eggtopsy and when I pulled the membrane, it started bleeding - then I saw it breathing. I felt horrible - first time that has ever happened to me. I know it would have probably quit anyway, but still.

No splashes darnit - but 8 beautiful blue/black chicks and 1 wellie chick. (probably male) I'll take pictures in a few.

You get a good % blue. Check in a few days for those blue wing tips.

one the one you eggtopsied. I've done that and felt awful too. I REALLY wish I had some fuzzy babies to hold. But, I just can't hatch until after the New Year at the earliest. Need to downsize about 30 birds before I can even think about more chicks, LOL.

Here they are.

Group shot - the oddball is the wellie.  The rest are project blue barnevelders.

The lone Wellie that somehow jumped into the bator.  And it looks like a boy.

Love the markings on this barnevelder:

I'm thinking cockerel here - look at that attitude!

Congratulations! They are adorable...

Uhoh....I've been outed as a lurker. LOL.

I'm in La Honda with my first 6 chickens! I've been amazed at how great chickens are and how easy its been to train them. My flock of 6 ranges from 2-3 months old now and has been out in the coop for a couple of weeks. They free-range in the day time and head back to the coop in the late afternoon. I've got them trained to follow me in the yard by giving them scratch whenever I am outside. So when they see me, they follow me around the yard, it's hilarious. I trained them to go up into the henhouse at night with mealworms. I swear those chicken would sell their flock-mates for a mealworm.

I'm thinking about joining in the NYD Hatch-a-thon, but am not sure. My first, and last, hatching experience was pretty bad. I think the humidity was too hight and all the chicks died. It was bad.

Anyway, Hi everyone! If anyone is near La Honda, let me know!
Leslie

hi leslie! and everyone else! wow, what a long week... couldn't remotely keep up with this thread.

lesie, i live in sonoma county now, but grew up in palo alto, & many many fond memories over the years of hanging out in Applejacks, esp. once after a big winter storm had blown through when all the power was out... such a great sense of community there. love la honda.

best,
laura

The other mental image would have been me beating the dang chickens to death with the rake, that's more what I felt like doing when I got down to the last few.  :somad

We should have made the effort to train them to go inside when the weather was warmer and drier.  This was NOT fun in the wet and cold and by myself.  If I hadn't seen that little buff looking so wet this afternoon, they probably would have still been outside tonight.  But once I spotted it, then I had to make the effort.

I'm glad I'm not the only crazy lady trying to get all the chickens in the Coops. Every time I coop swap or add juveniles to a big coop. It out of control for awhile ... I'm crawling under coops, climbing trees etc..... Thinking to my self... What the hell am I doing ?

Hey all. Gonna try to remember what I was supposed to answer. :-). Don't have enought eating eggs yet. I will start selling them in the spring just to friends, friends if friends etc. . Building up my layer flock and still culling a bit from my breeding pens. But my wife threatened to buy eggs the other day so we started eating the EE eggs.
Amy Beth, if you need some just give me a few days notice and I can save some usually 2-3 per day.

Oh and yes pam, my broody did hatch her eggs. Then I just had 2 BLRW go broody and hatch just recently. I stole the chicks to sell and the durn girls are still sitting on the nest and of course none of the other 4 hens have laid an egg since the two went broody.

And my Marans started laying avian. Finally!!
Overall egg production is way down. Just About everyone who was laying since summer has stopped or slowed way down. Only eggs from chickens that have recently started.

Got loads of chicks to sell!! Folks trickle in. Gonna have to have another processing time in about a month or so. :-). But excited for spring!!
