Quote: Spent most of the day getting ready for the rain. Cleaned both sides of the coop and put down double the sawdust to help with extra moisture. Filled up all the feeders, so I won't have to in the middle of the downpour. Mowed all the lawns, brought in full loads of fire wood/kindling. Gathered up and put away anything that would blow away. Made sure we had gas for the generator. Took down the removable safety pool fence (it can blow down in high winds and can be a pain/expensive to fix). I keep thinking I'm forgetting something, but just too tired right now.

Hopefully we will be ok. We are on top of a hill so the house should be ok unless our driveway washes out for some reason. This summer and fall we added a gutter to the coop to divert extra water from flowing back under the coop. We also diverted one of the main drains that comes off of our gutters from our house. The water used to flood right under where the coop sits. I got all my juveniles integrated in with my adult birds...not a lot of space for them, but hopefully everyone will be ok. Still got to re home a few birds to make some more room.

Everyone here makes it through this "pineapple express" style storm.

I just finished up too! I cleaned the coops this weekend and the coop feeders and waterers are all set.

Luckily this will only be several days of rain. Every couple hundred years or so we get that type of rain for a month. Oh boy...

Do you think it will be bad enough to keep them locked up tomorrow? I think I will since Yolo County has a flood warning in effect.

Otherwise I might need my rake to fish them out from under the coop!

One of my nice Heritage RIRs was out in the back yard this evening so I guess she figured out how to get over the fence. I need to work on that. She let me pick her up and put her back in the side yard. She is very calm and dignified. Not like the Leghorns and the Penes LOL.
Like the rake idea lol.
I open the coops and let them decide. a heavy rain will usually keep mine in.
The door open helps keep the coop aired out.
Flood warning is scary.
I am on a hill but the ground is still soggy from the last storms

yeah I dont need that. The last rain filled my wheelbarrow over half way.
There is no hope for my gutters. the trees still have alot of foliage and the pines are still dropping last years needles.
The wind is already starting to pick up some.

I wonder if my chickens will be out " singing in the rain"
Yes we have been digging moats around the coop, hubby tried to finish off the rest of the posts with concrete in the dark...cleaned the poop boards and did fresh bedding for everyone. I even gave them all protein rich treat with some extra carbs and electrolytes hoping to help out. Our coop building isn't moving as fast as we planned so we are bummed they have to spend another storm in the old leaky coop. I will probably check on them 20 times tonight to make sure they are ok.

Is anyone going to do the New Years Hatch along?
Not sure how to find the info ;)

I'm not looking forward to all the rain... ;( it's going to be a mess..

Thanks all for the congrats!! We did in fact have him at home. Amazing experience!!. Had such a limited time trying to get ready for the rain but added a few tarps and hoping its not too bad in the morn so I can get a bit more done. I barely got everything dried out from the last rain! :-p

Hey everybody! I miss you guys terribly! I've been really busy over here at my place lately. From the time I get up IM ON GO!! But anytime I get a second I always try to check up on everyone. JEFF CONGRATULATIONS MAN!!!! Your baby boy is beautiful! That's all that matters in life is raising your family right, and having your friends and family close. I hope your wife has a speedy healthy recovery! He'll be running around chasin' chickens in no time! I'm sending safe vibes out there to all you guys'! This storm could get bad from what I've been hearing. Im praying for us all. Ron I know you asked for pictures of my coops I built. I apologize I haven't gotten pictures up yet man. It's crazy when you asked me, that was the day before the last storm and the coops were pretty much destroyed in that storm:(. Thank God there weren't any chickens in them yet. I've really still been cleaning up since the LAST storm, last week. And here we go again  I had a guy off craigslist build me 2 custom coops that will be delivered to me tomorrow at noon :/ I hope he makes it here before the weather gets bad. But I do have some very beautiful pictures of my new Blue double-laced Barnevelder rooster, and I think 1 of 6 of the barnevelder pullets. One who's at the POL Trisha blessed me so graciously, I will FOREVER be in her debt. I have been bugging her since summer for some of her beautiful barnies. Thank You Soo Much Trisha! I think they like it here :) Its funny how every new breed you get, becomes your favorite every time! Mike

They are so gorgeous!

I hear you on the storm. Our coop hasn't even dried out from the last storm and here we go again. The rain is supposed to come in a few hours and I am up early, unable to sleep. I will be obsessively checking on the chickens.

The ducks are so easy compared to the chickens. They are laying like crazy- 7 to 9 or so eggs a day from them and I have 11 ducks. Pretty good odds. Plus when it rains they think it is awesome and have a blast outside. My poor chickens - lol. The last rain they looked so wet and bedraggled.
