California quail breeding groups

im just putting together breeding groups of calis for next yr and I was planning on keeping trios but have read they do better in pairs, what does everyone keep them in and is fertility better when kept in pairs or does it not make too much difference.

They do better with more then one hen as a pair the hen will get ripped by the male

In my experience, separate pairs work better. Earlier this year, I had a male and 2 females, and one female would always chase away the other female if it got near.

I suggest a pair. if you put it in a large, natural cage they might even raise their own chicks. my bobwhites do it all the time.
