Hello, I've been reading this thread and wanted to say HI. I live in the San Fernando Valley and we have 4 chickens (see signature). My neighbors have four chickens also, but I have not found anyone else in the area. Any other chicken addicts out there in the valley?

So sorry that no one has answered from Northridge. My cousins familey grew up in Northridge and remember raising chickens but that was very long time ago. My guess is that there are other there who raise chickens but they may not log-on to BYC.
Anyway WELCOME and enjoy the birds and their eggs. I live inland in the dryness and shadow of Death Valley. I have learned so much here on BYC and consider this place one of my hang outs..........LOL Seriously, BYC is very good resource of information and chickens are fun but be careful about the possiblity of acquiring an addiction to wanting too many different breeds. IT IS DANGEROUS !

Hello! Checking in from Long Beach

I am a total newbie who has just begun her chicken & coop search and I hope to have everything going in the next month. Do any of you know of local socal breeders that have older pullets since I do not have the set up to handle tiny baby chicks? I was hoping to just start them off outside in their coop & run. Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you!

Sue

Hi Sue, I'm in San Pedro...it's nice to see somebody so close by! I would suggest checking out Craigslist first of all. Setting up a brooder is very easy and can be pretty inexpensive. All you need is a brooder lamp, I used shredded newspaper (with paper towels over it for a few days) a small chick cup and waterer (with marbles in it so they won't drown)...chick feed and that's it!

As far feed stores, I visited Blacksmith's Corner in Bellflower and they did have hens. Call them up first...(562) 531-0386

There has been some talk of a meetup in this thread. Let's get it going! I think we should do it before it gets too hot. Maybe early May? Where would everyone like to have it? There has been a house offered in the high desert, Pomona, or we could meet at a park somewhere. Should I put up a poll?

Yep, I am the one in the high desert, or is there someone else too? We need to have another get together - the last one was so much fun!!! We have 2.5 acres, 2 goats, 2 horses, 1 dog, 50 chickens, 6 ducks, 2 turkeys and 2 cats. This place is a "bringyour own chair" place, but we have a BBQ and plenty of space.

As PotterWatch mentioned, I volunteered our property. Our property is far from being as fun as yours though!! We have just under a half acre with 3 dogs, 1 cat and 30 chickens (well, temporarily 32 since we have 2 little chicks

And we may be decreasing one in roos

).
