New to BYC and excited to find other people in SoCal who are "crazy

" enough to build coops and raise chickens in suburbia. I'm from the East coast and a bit more land, but CA is home now and I'm trying to slowly turn our 6,000 square foot lot into a "farm" Right now in the process of building my coop (slow going with three wee ones). Bummed that I got on here too late for the meetup. I would have been fun to meet some of you. I have a million questions. I know how to do a lot of this stuff in the country, but not so sure about how some things work in such a small urban area, like composting droppings to use on vegetable beds. I don't want to have a compost pile (smell and attracts critters) so I'm thinking of just putting it directly into a fallow bed and waiting a while before planting. Any suggestions welcome in regards to composting.... Also just created my page with some picks of my coop in progress.

I got one of those black composter that spins from costco.com. I also just put in raised, tiered garden beds made of recycled material from costco.com. Our composter doesn't smell, but really, I haven't kept it wet enough so I have droppings and wood shavings "stored" rather than composting in it. My yard is small too, but we have 17 chickens (3 cockerels still looking for homes). Good luck!

I'll be in Escondido at the end of AUG and can meet someone there too!

New Hen, what are you coming to Escondido for? Not to be nosy but do you need any Silkie roos? Anyone else in San Diego want to meet up? Just do a casual lunch??

We're only coming for a short time with our relatives from out of town to celebrate my dau's birthday....going to the Wild Animal Park, etc. Unfortunately, I think our silkie might be a roo and looking for a home at the end of summer. I've got two BCM cockerels and one Ameracauna cockerel who also need homes. It would be nice sometime to have a coop open house and see set ups...maybe we could start another thread and do it online....I don't know where the summer has gone....

Hey Everyone, I'm also in San Diego. Down Town near Balboa Park. Every time I mention having chickens, someone will say "I have them too". I checked City Ordinance and It says we are allowed up to 25 chickens. Have to be kept 50 feet from neighbors. Nothing about having Roos, just about the noise and the smell. The noise goes for barking dogs and parrots as well. At least 2 people from different households have to complain. I know my neighbors have put up with my barking dogs for years. Only one neighbor ever actually complains to me and does it in a very cordial way, just asks me to please bring my dogs inside. This neighbor has already asked me not to get a rooster, and I will comply. Too bad though. So far every chick I've gotten has been a hen. I would feel horrible to have to give a favorive chicken away because it was a boy.
