Did you feel the earth quake last night? Crazy!

Yep!! Woke me up. Lasted a while. Am at the LA/ OC border.

DH slept thru it but I happened to be on the commode when it started to sway

! SGV & SFV reported feeling it. Very shallow earthquake - apparently several smaller ones have been happening in the same area this past month.

Oof, just had a coyote come onto the property at 11am! It went after my rooster who sounded the alarm and got us down to them. The girls hid, one flew up to the house, the rooster took off into a grove being chased by the coyote and we managed to chase the coyote away. Nobody got hurt but my rooster is a nervous wreck now. All are back in the coop/run on lock down.

11am! That's pretty risky for a coyote!

I had one take a hen right in front of me too far away to hit him with a rock and he knew it.... Happened about twelve years ago.... Right now there are pups out learning to hunt....

Best defense is a good dog...

My DD's yard butts against a nature preserve and the Bobcats will easily jump a 6-foot fence to take whatever they want out of the yard - a small dog, a cat, a rabbit, whatever it can carry in its mouth and then happily trot down the neighborhood street with its prey in its mouth in BROAD daylight! I don't care for Pit Bulls but Bobcats is probably why DD has a Pit in her yard. I don't recommend a Pit around chickens but there are a lot of good flock guardian big breeds that won't abandon a flock to chase after a predator but wait with the flock until the predator is near before attacking it.

Very true! We have a bull mastiff and a Neapolitan mastiff and I can guarantee you no coyote would ever dream of coming into our yard with these two ;)

I had 3 in my backyard the other day at about 6 am. I saturated the back hill (no one behind us its kinda like wilderness undeveloped) anyways saurated it eith amonia then added moth balls and fixed some weak points like the border fence. So far *knock on wood* they havnt been back. They got for sure 5 chickens. Wounded a 6th. And a 7th died from injures i didnt know it had. I now have a talk radio station on 24/7 (works out cuz during part of the day its spanish. And then it switches to english depending on the signal) and have iur backtard lite up with flood lights that light up the backyard but dont bug the chickens. Ans i now go out and feed them about 5:30 to help keep them away. But coyotes will attack at any time bbut prefer dusk and dawn. I was screaming at it and it didnt care.

I'm looking to buy two marans, welsummers or barnvelder hens, aged between 6-12 months. I am looking to add chocolate egg layers to a small flock. Anyone got any available? I am willing to pay well :)
