Survey based and anecdotal observations demonstrate that backyard poultry ownership is increasing nationally and in California. At the same time, California’s ability to provide resources to backyard poultry owners is limited. In addition, there are no effective ways to communicate with backyard poultry owners in a coordinated fashion. To address these issues, the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and Cooperative Extension have made a short geo-survey (~2minutes) designed for the backyard poultry community. Results will help further clarify the location and number of backyard poultry farms in California. Furthermore, email addresses and other address information will help facilitate communication between poultry experts and backyard poultry enthusiasts. An example on the value of bridging the communication gap is being able to notify backyard poultry owners of an Avian Influenza outbreak. This will be extremely helpful in preventing another large outbreak. For this reason, we sincerely hope you consider participating in this survey.
Thank you for sharing this! I signed up. I'd love to get more people to sign up - get a better idea of who's out there..Hello from Northern California, hope all of you are doing well! While searching for something I found this link:
California Backyard Poultry Census

Quote: Thanks! get as many people as you know to do it, 'cause I think the numbers they have are way too low.
I got my other hens from D2D, but I want an olive Egger, bcm, or other colorful eggs. I found a couple of people on Craigslist...I could use any referrals you all may have. Looks like I will need to drive out to Norco, Phelan, or another place an hours drive away. I'm in northwest OC, but willing to drive to a reputable breeder.
I live in El Cajon and I know someone close who has Olive Egger's. Would you like her info?
Im in Norco. Lots of chickens for sale out here and the surrounding area, Mira Loma, Riverside and some in Corona.
I have some simple coops I built in this video. Corrugated Plastic roofs are little better than the sheet metal in my opinion... I feel they keep warmth better and arent as loud (when chickens land on it, rain hits it, etc). And I think they look a little better.
Simple wood frames with wire and plastic roofs... cheap and efficient. I spent less than $75 on most of these coops.

The ones in the smaller cages get out at least once a week. I have some larger "resort" pens I setup so they can stretch out, dust bathe and meet some hens. I rotate each day so they all get a turn. Depending on the rooster I also let them free range. The small cage spaces don't seem spacious enough for foraging. Do the smaller caged birds get any free-range or larger space runs? Noticed you had some chickens loose and not in cages? Beautiful birds!
I wish I could keep them all free range, but the roosters fight and the wife/neighbors get mad because they make mess pooping on patios and making all kinds of noise. The small cage spaces don't seem spacious enough for foraging.
