California-Southern

What's your set up like for quarantine? .

If all goes as planned, I will have a new aviary (8' x 15'), so the pullets will stay there til they are ready; they'll be the sole occupants. The aviary will be the same as my chicken run minus the coop, but they'll have a temporary coop to sleep in.

Chickens Galore is about 45 minutes away, so I will get my chicks there if I go the chicks route. This way I can get a Marans and another colorful egg layer.

Dare2Dream is the only place I found for older hens. (I like the delivery option!). Any other sources for Southern California?

This is my run, and the aviary will be about a meter longer.

I lost a Welsummer a month or so ago. I want to replace her as well as add another hen to my backyard flock. So I want two new hens. Should I get chicks or pullets?

I'll either get two pullets to 20 week old hens from Dare2Dream or chicks from a somewhat local farm. I'm guessing it may take six or more months for chicks to be integrated while the older hens may go in after one to two months depending on age.

Ideas?

I never deal with chicks. I always order pullets 2 to 4 months old, keep them in quarantine as house pets until they grow big enough (usually 5 to 6 months old) to equal the size of the outdoor chickens -- that way the new birds don't get picked on for being smaller. I almost ordered from Dare2Dream when I was considering a particular breed not offered locally. Heard good things about them but haven't used them yet. I like really rare breeds so have been ordering from private breeders directly.

D2D has robust birds, but your regular breeds. Love the delivery and no rooster guarantee.

That avery is perfect! I'd totally do older pullets on your case, no need to do chicks. Private breeders will offer pullets. I got mine from a guy in Ramona. There's breeders everywhere so keep an eye on craigslist and local Facebook groups.

I got my other hens from D2D, but I want an olive Egger, bcm, or other colorful eggs. I found a couple of people on Craigslist...I could use any referrals you all may have. Looks like I will need to drive out to Norco, Phelan, or another place an hours drive away. I'm in northwest OC, but willing to drive to a reputable breeder.

In Norco, Amber Waves Silkies has BCMs and DNA-sexed Silkies. They have turkeys and other livestock and you might check on their website or call them for other available chicken breeds that they don't normally feature on their official website. I plan to drive to Norco for a Silkie when I need another in future.

I'm in Ventura and just turned in my application with the city for chickens last week. A lot more hoops to jump through than in Idaho (where there were none). We have some fencing to replace but then are planning on building a Wichita Cabin Coop. Looking forward to having chickens again!

Im in Norco. Lots of chickens for sale out here and the surrounding area, Mira Loma, Riverside and some in Corona.

I have some simple coops I built in this video. Corrugated Plastic roofs are little better than the sheet metal in my opinion... I feel they keep warmth better and arent as loud (when chickens land on it, rain hits it, etc). And I think they look a little better.

Simple wood frames with wire and plastic roofs... cheap and efficient. I spent less than $75 on most of these coops.
