Off or slow???
It depends on the breeds and sometimes the individual chickens.
You can put a compact fluro light in the coop with a timer - and start increasing the light and see what happens.

My chickens are located 9 decrees north of the equator. There is only a difference of 45 mins light between "summer" and "winter" but its enough to drop my egg laying down by 50%

If I decide to provide extra winter lighting. What are we talking? A 40 watt bulb or artificial sun power?

40 watt should work as long as it "extends" the length of lit hours in a day. Breeds that slow down in winter rather than stop can include silkies, leghorns, swedish flower hens and legbars.

Personally I feel that hens stop laying in the winter for a reason - to regain health and vitality that sets them up for spring and summer laying. It gives those poor bones a rest - literally!

I totally agree, since we are not producing eggs as a business... I'm trying to become "knowing" about the breeds I have. I still need more info on EE's and what ever this one is;

More than a couple of BYC' ers have said EE, but I don't really know and she hasn't started laying yet, that I know of. We did get 2 new eggs (colors) today;

The last 2 on the right side came today. The cream egg on the end is the first from our Tetra about 30 minutes ago and the red egg came this morning from I'm guessing our Golden Comet or the girl above???? It appears we have 6 layers now... The eggs in this pic, are in order of appearance.

I see a lot of people talking about ethics on BYC when selling, trading or dealing with breeders or trying to find services. I try to deal fairly and honestly with everyone I come across so naturally I expect the same in return, but I will always keep my guard up.

5 minutes ago while surfing Craigslist I happened upon an ad for big roosters, in Perris, CA. So, being curious (because I know who's ad it was) I clicked on the link... To my shock and awe I see pictures of my 2 Roosters, Chris (sex link) and Buffy (Buff orp) that I had just returned on Saturday for a swap for pullets. Only in this ad the buff was advertised as a buff rooster (fine) but Chris was listed as a Barred Rock...He was sold as a sex link...

I think this has reinforced the fact that I will not be getting chickens from this person in the future...

sure looks like a barred rock.

It looks like your roosters will be soup after all.

I am sorry you had to go through this. Unfortunately its common.

It does look like a barred rock to me, too. I think the seller was wrong the first time when he sold you this chicken as a sex link. Was it a chick when you first bought it? Also, I looked back at the picture you posted, and your rooster at 20 wks looks a lot younger than the one in the craigslist ad. Maybe it's a different rooster.
