Hmm and the heat hasn't even started. I noticed it too. I am needing to supply more shade. I have heard of people giving their chickens a big ice block in their water. Mine are all walking around with their mouths open. Lots of water available.

I have chicks, 25 days old. They're walking around with their mouths open too. We decreased the wattage on the bulb, but I still had to pull it back a bit today (and clean their water 3 times). Thankfully, their coop will be under an 80-year-old tree, so they'll be fine this summer.

I put out large rubber bowls of water and the chickens stand in it cooling their tootsies!

I have a misting system in my coop because my girls are SUPER SPOILED!!! I also have a white cotton curtain on the side of the coop that gets the most heat. If it gets super-hot, I put a bit of Pedialyte in their water. Again. Super. Spoiled.

Just wondering...my chicks seem ready for more space. We're in Santa Ana, and the coop will be ready this weekend. They will be 4 weeks old on Monday, 5/5. Can I put them in the coop this weekend, as long as I keep a heat lamp in the coop for a couple of weeks?

I've been keeping everything watered down, but they still seem so hot. I noticed they do love to stand in the puddles of water. I will add some ice cubes in their water and let them run through the sprinklers later. Lol

they should be fine in the coop, depending on the size of your coop, a normal 75 watt bulb should be enough, you don't want to cook the littles

how feathered out are they?

how feathered out are they?[/quote]Thanks or the reply! They seem to be getting feathers very quickly. I noticed a few feathers growing in on their heads today.

this photo was taken on Monday, so they already look bigger.

Since they have feathered in, they should be fine without heat. Mine are 4 weeks tomorrow. They have been outside for 2 weeks, and I eliminated the brinsea eco-glow heater early this week (after the cold weekend).

Put them in their new coop and give them a heat source and then watch to see IF they sit under it. If they do, they still want the heat, but if they are not interested, you will find out. Best to err on the side of caution is my feelings.... I use a 75 watt purple reptile bulb for the heat source at nite....FOR SURE during these hot days they don't need it..... ;)
