RIP 1953-2021
I hadn't thought of going to the meetup but am considering it.
I have no chickens right now but am missing getting to hang with chicken folk.
For what its worth I am in the planning stages of a largish poultry house. My focus will be Guinea Fowl and Sumatras if I can find a source. the Guinea Fowl will be for eggs, meat and feathers... The Sumatras will be for broodies and because they are soo good at foraging and are excellent fliers I can hopefully free range them with the Guinea Fowl.
I love chickens and think they are a hoot. But I also don't anthropomorphize them. Instead I learn about what they do and why and let them be. so I rarely handle except for a cursory health inspection and rarely if ever do I need to do that. Since guineas have such a short time that they lay eggs ... I will have a few chickens for my own eggs.
When I move up to the house I will be on my own financially no income or very little from what I get from Social Security. So Yep any money I spend on feeding will be coming out of that and what I can earn from Guinea Keet sales and eggs and meat.
And of course to feed myself.
Also there are some new rules here in San Diego County .... about how many roos you can have Fortunately I have more then five acres so I can have up to twenty roos... Yay because Ilike em... And if I adopt one it isn't slated for the dinner table... Just wanted to make that clear.
