Not everything on the internet is necessarily factual but it always raises questions:

Answer by James Dawe
http://www.answers.com/Q/Why_do_chickens_eat_chicken_droppings
Started career as professional chef then a district sales manager for a wine & spirits company. Retired in 2005, breeding Araucana chickens.

"They may appear to eat droppings however what you are probably seeing is the chicken eating the bugs crawling on the droppings. Droppings and fresh manure attracts flies and insects and chickens like to eat those insects."

"Best Answer:  Yes, human saliva is toxic to birds. But since it was a just a little bit I don't think it will really harm him/her.But if it does, I don't think it will severely hurt her, I think it will just give him/her some minor sicknesses. You take good care of him/her and next time be careful while taking a picture next to him/her or having any activity with him or her next to your face. Hope I helped! =)

Like you say - not everything on the Internet is fact.

"I think it will just give him/her some minor sicknesses"
Does not instill me with any confidence that they have any ACTUAL knowledge on the matter.

I was hoping for some factual evidence either way :(

factual evidence comes from fully documentated articles that have citations from scientific sources.. ONLY those in the Know will now how difficult that was to write at this time.

I'll have to start bookmarking stuff when I come across them - sometimes I read things along the way and don't bother to remember from where! I don't see my vet often enough to get his input and then I forget to ask him when I finally do see him!!
