The heavy rains forced us to tarp the front run because as luck would have it that's the end the wind blows in the rain. It stays dry under the coop and nestboxes. The rain gutters on the patio roof over the coop channel the heavy rainwater away. The coop's patio slab is raised higher than the rest of the open patio area so no flooding happens in the open pen area.




Can't play with the hens today as they are spending a lot of time inside the coop. I opened the nestbox lid to give them more light inside -- the two windows aren't letting in enough light. While I'm cooped up myself in the house I've been learning operations of my new camera so hopefully I can post better pictures soon.

Hey there!

How's everyone doing with the rain? My run is a stinking vat of sucking, squelching mud. I've got a tarp up but the wind just blows it right in. Plus the coop and run are at the bottom of a hill (to keep them away from neighbors) which is FINE 99.999% of the time but because la nina turned el nino...Well, you've all been swimming in it too.

Anyway, out of desperation I threw some redwood bark in there. Same stuff I used around the house before I got rain gutters and they enjoyed kicking it into pathways and out of where it was supposed to be. No dyes, no wood, just bark, so I haven't had any cases of splinters or bumblefoot. I think it'll attract flea and such long term but short term to provide a non squelching substrate, it seems like a good idea.

What's everyone else doing?



Yup, I'm letting the old Christmas tree dry out in there as well.

To all - You may notice an increase in ammonia if your run gets wet. If you are familiar with Sweet PDZ for horse stalls, it is also helpful in the coop/run to reduce ammonia problems. It is available as a powder or granules, and I haven't found any contraindications for use around chickens or gardens. Just distribute it around the floor and it provides immediate results. It can be mixed in with litter and added to the compost pile later.

I learned about it from a friend who utilizes it like cat litter under her roosts. Her coops are amazingly fresh and bug free.

What a cute little coop AND it has wheels too!

Yep, for just a little more $$$ we added a detachable run and added the heavy duty wheel pkg so we can remove the pen and wheel the monster coop out of the way should we need to paint or repair the house in future. The wheels lift off the ground when not in use and don't use air so they never go flat.

I alternate between Sweet PDZ and Chick Flic. Swear by the stuff.
