That is so cute!! I'm a bit north of all of you, Ventura county. I did live in Vista for a while - worked in Carlsbad. I currently have a pile of 4 silkies sitting in one box, on 10 eggs. They started with 12, but kicked out 2. I started with 7 broodies, but 3 decided they didn't want to stick it out. I gave my silkies individual boxes, and they hate them. These girls started brooding outside of the boxes entirely. I can't wait to see how they deal with the chicks.
LOL that fluff pile!!!

Yup, first time chicken parent. I'm very familiar with Fallbrook. I grew up in Escondido and worked some in Fallbrook. Pretty area!

I did see that video...wow! It's like something out of a B horror film. Bantam vs. Mothra.

If I send some pics would you mind taking a guess at breed and gender? The chick came from a mixed bantam tub...and I know zero about chicken breeds.

hahaha.. thats a first time I've seen 4 go brood on same nest. I have 2 gather on nests often, but usually end up breaking a lot of the eggs.

First time ever with broodies, I had 2 silkies. One would grab the eggs, sitting nicely, get up to do her business, the other would steal the eggs. So, they ended up trading eggs day after day. 1 white and 1 blue silkie. The blue got up with the first hatched chicks and showed them around, the white stayed on the nest until the last one hatched. They co-parented the babies beautifully. I have no idea how the 4 will do it. I slipped eggs under each corner. I haven't checked them to see where the eggs are now. I did find the 2 they kicked out. I am REALLY glad that 3 decided they were done sitting. 7 would have been ridiculous. That photo has 6 hens. This was taken after 1 had left.

first chicks of the year hatched yesterday.
Beautiful adults and adorable chicks. Congratulations!

What kind of bantam?

I do not see a beard on it and with the feathered feet I would venture to say a Partridge colored Bantam Cochin, Looks like possibly boy by the comb and wattles starting to
develop
Thanks. I'm thinking cockerel, too. Bummer, I like the little guy...and roosters aren't allowed in the city.

Welcome! 6 hens might only work with a *very* gentlemanly rooster. I have 6 girls to 1 boy right now and they all have bare backs again this year. If you get 7 hens, one might be a rooster anyway! That's been my luck with sexed pullets from hatcheries, at least

Hhhhmmmm, I'm thinking of getting an Easter Egger rooster or a buff orpington. We could add more hens to the flock, but 6 seems more manageable right now. Plus, I'm worried about chicken math....lol. I'd rather start small and add later as we become more familiar with other breeds. If the rooster ends up being too much I'll try to find a home for him. Plenty of chicken people around here, I just don't know them personally. I hope it works out well.
