I live in north San Diego County, so right by inland empire as well. My in-laws are in the OC so I'm there pretty often. Where are you located? Is he a first generation OE?

How old are your birds? You can always wait until spring when there's lots of availability. That way you can get to know your existing flock and see where you really have gaps.

I thought I NEEDED a Dorking for the longest time and now I realize my Faverolle fills that role which opens up a space for a different breed.

My neighbour has a beautiful Olive Egger that's a first generation cross between a crested cream legbar and a partridge penedesenca. She lays green bean green eggs with brown speckles!

My mottled java and cuckoo maran are 6 months. My silkie pullet is about 8 months. My silkie rooster is a bit younger than that, but I'm not exactly sure on his age. I got him for free. My two ameraucanas and one cream legbar are 5 weeks.

My little ones are seperated in their brooder/hutch. I have a larger coop for the older chickens, but they only sleep in it, I let them free range all day pretty much. I have quite a bit of land and right now it just seems so lonely with such a small flock.

How do you like your faverolle? I saw a few at the feed store, but I read they can easily be at the bottom of the pecking order. I know it's animal nature, but that always worries me that I might get a bird that gets bullied, or bullies the others too much.

Oh and I am in that group I just don't go on facebook often enough to see the activity. I've been on byc quite often, always looking up info for beginners

If you get a feed store faverolle, wait until Fallbrook Fertilizer gets them in. They order from Meyer, Cackle and Belt and the faverolles from there are way nicer than the ones you can get from Hawthorne, who orders from Ideal.

That said, while she's pretty, she's the dumbest little poofball ever. However, if you have a good rooster, he should keep any dim witted bird somewhat safe. She needs lower perches because she's pretty...thick...in more ways than one.... and has gotten double bumble, but she recovered quickly.

My Sussex, Welsummer and Golden Cuckoo Marans have been the best all around birds. The barred rock the friendliest. The Phoenix rooster is the one everyone falls in love with, though!

If you have a mottled java, I'm assuming she came from Vista Country Feed? They order from Privett and have good, healthy chicks. Their labeled "Ameraucanas" are not color type specific, so they're actually Easter Eggers. Semantics, yes, but helpful if you want something specific! If you love those bearded blue egg layers, though, the Cackle Hatchery EEs have some of the most colorful birds and biggest beards.

That's hatchery birds though, there's always private breeders locally, too, who sell some wonderful birds!

Another FB group is San Diego County Chicken & Bird Trader. There's some breeders with stellar birds for sale there. Some are on this forum, too!

My mottled java and cuckoo maran, and now my welsummers that I just picked up this weekend from El Cajon are my feed store birds. Everybody else came from breeders. And yes my mottled java is from the feed store in Vista. I saw they had SF when I got her. Sadly she is my meanest one. Everyone else gets along great, even my huge cuckoo maran. That java is meaner than my rooster.

Hi folks-

I'm in Woodland Hills and I'm very, very new to this. I just got a Cream Legbar, a Double-laced Barnvelder and a Partridge Plymouth Rock last week. 6-week old chicks who have settled in nicely.

I'm fascinated with them and spend so much time out in their run that I'm not getting much else done anymore.

It will be months before we have any eggs but I'm delighted with just chickens being chickens so far.
