Hi!
Im writting from upland ca!
i found out that currently the city law says we cant have chickens under municipal code 18.08.060 Prohibited uses and structures. But it also says we can have 5 chickens under 17.51.010 Definitions.

Animal control is not fining right now. But the law will be corrected to say that we cant have chicken this year (early next year at the latest) said animal services.

If you are in Upland let me know so we can write to our council members!!

If you are not in Upland, but you've gone thru this petition in your town, please share with me a copy/draft of the propossal submitted. This will be of great help!

Im looking to educate the council on the improtance of backyard chickens to improve our health, educate our kids, and overall make America great again!! ;)

Hi everyone! I've been lurking for a long time while wishing for chickens, and finally my wonderful husband built me a chicken coop for Christmas this year. I'm wondering about good reputable places to buy chicks in the north San Diego county/south western Riverside county area? I don't really want to mess with mail ordering on my first go-round, especially since I'm starting with a small number. Suggestions?

Amelia Egghart - hello fellow Fallbrook-ian! This winter has been crazy, hasn't it? My garden is definitely not complaining about the rain though.
I did mail order from Myer's hatchery and only ordered 3 chicks.

Hi Amelia!

Yes i've heard....
all LA county, and a bit of riverside and san bernardino... how sad.

but i read it is not as bad as the previous one (which lasted years! :( ).

im thinking in ordering from out of state to be safe.

i will definatelly keep an eye for Newcastle.

Thanks!

Last year, because of Newcastles, some Midwest breeders stopped shipping their birds as far back as May last year with comments on their websites that they were not shipping birds because of Newcastles. With bio-secure breeders like that it does a lot to stop the spread if birds aren't shipped across state lines while an outbreak is flaring country-wide. I didn't order any shipped birds last year. Later on in July my vet was warning not to bring any new birds onto the property. However, how does one stop WILD bird populations from infesting our backyards?!

Myers is quite a distance away(Midwest0 -- Belt Hatchery(Fresno area) and California Hatchery(Fresno area) are both in Calif and so is Dare2Dream(Lompoc area) and Dare2Dream delivers from one to several birds to L.A. County cities and makes arrangements of where to meet. I just go to my local feed store and special order what I want and my local feed store gets his poultry mostly from Privett Hatchery (New Mexico). I just chose not to get any new birds last year because of the Newcastles scare. Seems there's always something that affects poultry every year. At the Salton Sea wild migratory birds (ducks, geese, gulls, etc) are dying from Avian Cholera. News said it happens every year and local authorities gather up the 1000's of dead birds to try to keep the bacteria down but it's hard during migration season. Yesterday evening i heard a large flock of geese flying overhead around dusk and prayed they weren't stopping off at the Salton Sea!

2019, for me at least, is looking like a sit tight and wait it out kind of year. I can't imagine having to put my birds down. I hope this ends soon.

Do you have a lot of birds? We're zoned for only 5 hens/no roos. We're down to 4 hens after losing one to heatstroke last summer and because of Newcastles we haven't increased up to 5 birds yet.

I have ten and six of them are trained with voice and hand signals and very very close to me. One rooster is a house bird. The other rooster is like a dog and follows me everywhere, loves belly rubs, falls asleep on me, etc. I can have up to 24, I believe. But I'm not expanding until this is over.

HI! I am in Homeland, Riverside County between Hemet and Riverside, near Temecula. I have an abundance of Rhode Island Reds mixed with bantams (Pheonix, Silver-tips, etc.) and would like to swap some of my reds for other colors/varieties.

With the Newcastles reported in so many counties in SoCalif you might want to wait before introducing new birds onto your property (or vice versa). Bio-security is always on our minds when it comes to swapping. Meanwhile, I'm so attached to my birds I can't imagine giving any one of them away LOL!
