I agree, total laying machines. The young man working there told me they were actually RIR/white leghorn mix...but, all my RIRs have always been varying degrees of red and light red with a few white feathers thrown in there! Yes, it has been cold, but I got three eggs out of two birds in less than 24 hours. Wish my other hens would get a clue.

Carlyle, ya just gotta know that the birds love ya when they lay like that, even in the cold!

Sweet birds too, very nice and mellow.

Welcome Cadbury! We so cal folks need to keep in touch, maybe do egg exchanges? What breeds do you all have?

You are funny ! RIR as far as I know are production birds. I have four RED Star sex links which are a cross between RIR hens and white Leghorn which are also production chickens and I get four to three eggs a day. But I also give them extra light and food from my kitchen.

Well, I've always raised Americaunas (love those birds). I did not know the red sex links were a cross between, so, did I buy red sex links or RIRs? You know, come to think of it, it just said "laying hens" on the pen! I did not think to ask, just was "jonesing" them thar eggs! I usually stay away from white leghorns, meanest birds I've ever met besides Golden Lankenvelders...I had two of those roos and they were the meanest guys ever, attack, attack and attack. Did not matter how much I chased them or showed them I was boss, I think they saw me as another roo...yikes!

Thanks for the info, if I have red sex links and they are sweet, good! I never took any classes to learn this stuff, just bought chickensl, joined this forum (back in 2002) and learned as I went along.

Good morning. Well I can not tell without a picture but my guess is that they are Red Star Sex links and are reported to be very docile. There are some very nice pictures of a flock of these here on BYC. I have had them before and Laurie was especially sweet. Also I agree about the Leghorn. A friend gave me an extra rooster once and he was very nasty so he ended up in my freezer. I have tried to stay away from most roosters since then. Since officially they are not permitted here in RC proper. Of course there are several in my neighborhood since I live on the outskirts where the roads are not paved etc.
BUT I am waiting for a batch of EE eggs for my bator for an early spring hatch.

This is my first try to post a picture - so - here is one of my "RIR" maniacs from Vista County feed. Sorry the wires and rectangular shadows get in the way, but if you look close you can see a great deal of patterning in the feathers - almost a white with pink filigree. The chickens are also oranger (rather than darker rust or red) than I had expected. This photo is very color-true.

Hello again Carlyle- Beautiful Chickens and ark! great photos!
You has asked me before how I set up a run around my ark in my small yard and looking at your yard it's very similar to mine - with planters and cement. What I did was cover the planter area under the ark and surrounding the ark with straw all the way to the fence, to the side of the house (which is only 10'wide) and put a walk-through gate on one end and some bird netting overhead (stapled to the fence and the side of the house tall enough for me to walk under). I had no top on it originally until one of the EE's decided to fly up on the fence top one day- so they were put back in the ark until I had the bird net topping on it- so now they get to come out of the ark every day but they are safe from flying over the fence.

These are the girls out in the run area beside the ark

Our gals are 36 wks, 4 RIR and 3 BR's. Was super disappointed when I went to our local feed store after easter hoping, expected Easter Eggers and all they had were the RIR and BR's. Our gals have been laying since Labor Day, 21 weeks. We've been getting 7 eggs daily since. Amazing. AND, there were 5 with double yokes and 3 separate weeks we got 8 eggs. Production was I am sold and completely smitten by our gals. They are amazingly sweet.

Dear Carlyle, Yup that pretty girl looks just like a red star sex link. I ordered mine from My Pet Chicken and thought that it was worth the extra bucks to get just pullets.
Your tractors are very nice also. Mary from Ridgecrest
