What brand and style of feed do you feed your flock? It seems the only feed I can find is made by Star Milling (Ace Hi, Kelly's, Diamond) and is in crumbles or "Kracketts" with 20% or higher protein. I have to mix in oatmeal to reduce the protein level for the geese. The only pellet feed they seem to manufacture is 16% for layers. My flock consists of four young geese and eight young chickens. A lot of feed gets wasted and I would prefer pellets, if I could find them.

If you feed non-layer pellets, where do you buy it? I am in western Riverside county.

I only feed chickens and I use the Layena brand. I buy crumbles but it comes in pellets also. I'm surprised you can't buy feed for geese. I'm able to buy feed for my two quail. Have you checked online to see if you can find what you need and where to buy it? Our feed store here in Inyokern will order what you need if they don't normally carry it. Maybe other feed stores in your area would do the same, but I guess you've already checked.

Have you considered asking the stores to order pellet feed ? As far as waste, I considering designing a new feeding system but first I am sure their are plenty of designs here on BYC that I need to look up and study what others are already using. My neighbor is starting to harvest her own feed that has grown as a volunteer and we are both wondering if we can grow even more. Hey Betty right ? We love our birds but they are costly !

I have a hard time finding feed too. There is only 2 places that sell near me. One sells Kruse, the other sells Kelley's. That's about it.

My feed store sells Kruse and Kellys too. I've had good luck with Kruse.

We've had a neighbors kids - not really kids, they're over 18 watch the animals and it's been horrible. I either have to try another neighbor or a service or just stay home I guess.

I use Kruse also. The local ACE sells it and my birds do OK. I know what you mean about using 18 year olds. I payed a neighbor once and both the water and feed bins were empty when I returned home. I am lucky to have a very efficient middle age woman to care for them at this point. Most of my friends and neighbors are afraid of CHICKENS. I am amused by this. I do not even have a rooster. And if I did he would not be an attack rooster or else he would go to freezer camp.

Hope everyone is enjoying Labor Day! I've been outside working in the yard, and then took out my two baby EEs and let them play in the lawn for a bit. They were having so much fun, but I had to put them back in their cage so I could come in the house. I suppose if I go away, I will have my daughter come feed my chicks as she did in the past. I buy my Kelly's feed at Red Barn so haven't tried others.

I just emailed Star Milling for their recommendation on a feed for my geese. I was in a feedstore today that sells ratite feed, and it looked interesting. Depending on their response, I might request a feedstore that carries Purina horse feeds to ask the Purina sales representative to include a bag or two of pelleted Flockraiser with their next order. I may be making a mountain out of a molehill!

Had an incident with one of my EE chicks. I have two, 3 1/2 week old chicks indoors. Came home and noticed one of the chicks not being as active. When I went to get her, there was something coming out of her beak and attached to the side of their cage. Turns out the chick had swallowed part of a thread from the basting of a blanket I had over the cage, and wasn't able to reach food or water. I couldn't pull out the thread so cut it. She is doing fine, but did worry whether it would hurt her. Somewhere I read that chicks/chickens hurt themselves because they get into everything. This incident just made me be more aware of their surroundings.
