I keep wanting to ask Bubba what kind of peppers he has that the parrots attack. They are here too, but mostlly eat Mulberries. Mybe if you planted hot chillie peppers they would stop eating them...

Just an update from me, we have chicks that hatched almost 2 months ago. This puts my chicken total to 29 now.

It is funny because it looks like it will be half and half for the babbies. For instance, there are 2 partridge silies, and looks like one boy and one girl. Same with the grey silkies, the cochins, etc. funny how that worked out.

Not sure if we are "allowed" to have chickens here but a few neighbors of mine have had them for several years now. As long as we don't have Roosters, nobody around here could care less, so it's fine.

Just 2 chickens and a huge Mastiff so far, luckily the pooch could care less about the chickens...I have found them standing on him.

Hey Gail, aren't you going to quickly have many many more chickens?

I'm waiting for my shipment, and hoping like crazy that they'll be ok. I'll only be able to keep the hens and will be looking for homes for the roos, unless I get a roo that's speachless (HA HA!). I'm so excited I am beside myself planning their outdoor home, I have to work around an existing aviary and a raised bed, plus make sure the rats/mice and owls/hawks can't get them. It's also inspired me to clean my guest room for the brooder! It's never been used for guests, only craft supplies and junk...

Do you guys have favorite outdoor enclosures for our hot, dry and only sometimes frosty climate?

We hatched out eggs. Everyone sent "extras." Which was nice until there were 50 eggs in the incubator!

Our total now is 29, and staying that way for a few more weeks. My hubby and I counted "hens" today (we guessed which baby (adolescent?) chicks were girls and boys. It looks like we will have about 10-12 hens.

It is funny how when looking at the cochins, some are almost half again as big as the others, and growing combs faster and redder than the littler ones. So we think those are boys. The only breed we can't tell on it the polish. And we only have 3 of them. The silkies are like the cochin, bigger and such. Then we have 2 Java, and one has a comb and the other doesn't.

We have a hen house for our climate. It is a lot like a play house, with chain link all around it and over the top!

There is a feed store in El Monte who will take roos, or any chickens at any age... So that is where ours are going.

Good luck Susuan! Where in SD are you? We go down to Legoland about 2 - 3 times a year, as we have passes...
What kind of chicks did you order? I hope that they don't send them in the heat....

50 eggs! Wow you are very brave. I ordered 7 quail eggs as I have a quail who lives with my bunny, she's going to lay herself to death and she sits on her eggs too, strange bird. I ordered bobwhite eggs but after I ordered I read about them and I think my girl is too small to be a bobwhite! I think she might be a button! ooops!!!! I haven't hatched eggs since I was a girl, my son is very into this whole deal as long as it's quail. He's not into the chickens (but he hasn't seen how cute they are yet!!!)

I ordered a grab bag assortment of all the bantams from mcmurray, I was wondering about the heat. It's been fine here but when you get into the dessert, very hot. I do hope they would delay shipment rather than put them in danger!!! I also hope they don't send me all roos! That would suck! If things don't work out I'll have to wait until after summer to start this project. I couldn't order them sooner as I was out of town for a week and didn't want them to arrive while I was gone. Have had no luck finding something local either, strange!

We are about an hour south of Legoland (very fun place!!) Maybe we could have a chicken convention at legoland!! I love the pirate area they added. Do they make chicken legos?

I'm reading and designing like crazy for a coop. I have a little fenced off yard where my veggies are (keeps my dog out). But It doesn't keep flying predators away so I have to work out some kind of lid over part of it when I can't supervise.

Anyway, back to the great Chicken Coop adventure! I'm glad this board is here as everyone I know thinks I'm nuts when I start talking chickens...

I wasn't brave as much as not wanting the eggs to "die." They just kept comming, and I couldn't not include them.

I don't believe that McMurray sexes the bantums, so you will get about half roos and half hens.

For local, I don't know. Some of the pet shops do it seasonally. Ours gets chicks a bit before Easter, then once they are gone, that is it.
The place in El Monte has chicks most of the time. (It's only about 2 - 3 hrs away from you!) Ha!

If you've seen the pirate area, surley you have seen the chickens made out of lego! In the mini-land. OK, so maybe they are not chickens, just birds, but i think they are chickens.

There are pet or feed stores in National city that sell chicks, not sure about bantams though. There is a feed store in Lakeside that has Turkey chicks (or they had some a week ago)
