CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

I would love them, but atwater is a little too far for me, I wouldn't be able to get out there till next weekend and by then i'll have some EEs hatch.

Yesterday was good and bad. I had gone out to check animals and lost my very first Lionhead doe. She was close to 7 years old, so I guess she was just tired. I have another doe her age and I'm hoping I don't lose her any time soon, but they were breeders before I got them and they just kind of hung out with us. Never bred, because they had been bred so much before, but they made me fall in love with the breed. Had a little funeral today for her, by myself.

I got a call while I was at the show that someone had found one or two of my birds in the alley. I kept thinking all day that there was no way at all they got out and I must have had a visit from those kids again. So I went out this morning and checked birds. No birds that I could tell were missing, but my neighbor said they were taken to his house and he had them caged for me and I could ick them up. So I walk doen the street today since he was gone by the time I got back and he tells me he has my Sumatra roo.....hmmmmm Nope, cause I just had a problem with him and was oout there holding him and saviing his leg! That was kind of disappointing to the men that were there, who didn't realize I understand them when they told him to charge me $20 for a reward and then $60 to buy the bird. He told them to be quiet and leave me alone and then when he found out it wasn't my bird, one told him to sell it to me since he was the one who found it. He did telll me I could have it, but I told them I didn't want it.

So long story, longer.........all of my birds were fine, I don't have anything missing and I have gotten 13 new birds since friday. LOL Oh and 3 rabbits!

I'm going to be getting rid of a couple of birds. Not because I want to, but I need to. They have sentimental value to me and I know that's a weakness, but oh well. They have a connection to a part of my life I lost, so although I'm trying to let go, I want to make sure they are well taken care of and not freezer campers. Now to go through what I have and make a decission. This is really hard for me. I have a few more I feel like this about and I'm going to try not to get like this with any of the others. Time to take care of business and just get back to my original program.

So I had been going to toss out quail eggs that were due on the 26th, but came home to them hatching. I have a few that look weak, some that I had to help out this evening and still a question about how they'll do. Lots of clear eggs and a few stinky ones. Glad they're so tiny. Don't think I'll order from the same place again, but the the lights go on this week and I should have some from my own birds again. I got some cool colors I've never seen before, so I hope most make it so I can see how they turn out.

I have eggs in lockdown due today, but nothing yet. Weird though to have 2 late hatches in to different incubators, but better late than never.

OK I think I've decided I'm really going to let them go. I can start over when I get moved.

So.....First 2.

Lil Jovi and Sterling

Jovi is from my baby that was stolen, Bon Jovi. He was a beautiful blue AM from seabrightmom. Lil Jovi's mom is one of my Bev Davis hens and he's a really big bird.

Sterling was a Lav AM cull, but he has the most beautiful green and purple feathers! I was hoping to keep him till moult so I could save and use some of them, but I have way too many birds.
Have to say that Sterling is usually a wuss around the bigger roos. Yesterday he also ran up and bit at my youngest daughter (24) and youngest son's (15) pant legs. I took them both out with me today and he was fine. My daughter doesn't live with me and my son is too into his video games to even know what kind of birds we have. I was gone and I think Sterling was just watching the flock. He does have a bad habit though. If I'm carrying an open bucket of feed he seems to want to fly into it and eat one the way. Otherwise, he's a really good boy.

Friday I owned 16 roos. Some should have gone already, but I just couldn't let them go. I got some new birds, some are chicks and plenty of cockerels. I bought a trio yesterday, so yet another roo. I have to be realistic. Both of these birds mostly freerange, but they will be fine penned. I just don't want them to become a meal. I will give them to anyone who will give them a home and hopefully a lot of girls. BTW Jovi was hatched from one of my darkest brown FBCM eggs and his dad came from the bluest egg I have ever hatched. It was gorgeous! Sterling also came from a very nice egg and since Lavs are still in the works, I'd say they were the closest blue Lav eggs I have ever gotten. So they should put out some really pretty egg colors.

Plus..........Look how pretty they are.

Jovi up front and Sterling in back

Hold on..........Look at Sterling and then look at the bird on this link https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...ng-pictures-and-discussing-our-birds/14300_20

He's in one of the bottom posts. I had wanted to copy Sterling. I think this one is very close, sooooo maybe I don't have to give up that idea.

Maaaaaaannn. OK I'm holding off on Sterling for now, but Jovi and a couple of others are going to have to go. It figures. Plus now I have to figure out how to get more!

Posted this in the thread for the Stockton show, but want to make sure it gets especially put here.

I just left the poultry auction. I live right down the street from it. Gave the owner the info for BYC today and we talked about the show. He didn't go, but he wanted to know if I could put out feelers for him. He wants to do an annual or bi-annual Specialty auction. All quality birds. As you know most auctions are the birds people are just done with, so you never know what you will get. But he wanted to see if there was enough interest to do it. I told him I could ask about 100,000 + people and find out, but starting here. Supposedly this is the biggest poultry auction in the US, but then again I haven't been to but a couple, so maybe if he get in here or someone at the auction comes in for him we ca get some details and he can get our feelings at to whether it is something we would want.

Would this be something anyone would want to do? Would it be something that should be done at a show maybe? He's trying to get some kind of an idea. We could probably do reserves, so no one has to go any lower than they want to. IDK. I thought it was a good idea when he asked, but I'm thinking about it and would that many really show up? Thing is a lot of people who attend the shows don't show, but they do buy and sell.

OK someone give me some input. Pros and cons.

So I found a lady with some 4 week old silkies about 15 minutes from me, they are pet quality, one is missing a toe and the other has a pink toe on each foot but they are so cute. I'm gonna plug the fresno show thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...8-fresno-ca-info-buy-sell-wanted#post_8331737 since you guys had all sorts of fun in stockton without me I have to go see some birds and hopefully find me some wheaten ameraucanas

his commission is pretty high 30 or 33% though I know most of his birds are just birds nothing special mostly culls...JS West has a sale like that though and it does well...I don't know that sales yard isn't anything special and I don't think it can be cleaned up to look high class myself but I like the idea just needs to be at a better place maybe a seminar like the Heritage event or something like that might draw people interested it could be fun
