CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

Yes it said Aptos & don't even know where that is.....LOL I would have to look it up.......with my luck it's clear the heck gone someplace. I swear I chase around more for chickens than any other thing in my life.....LOL

Aptos is down south of Santa Cruz. If you decide to buy them, maybe I can go visit my DH for a day and bring them up to this area.

Haha! That looks a lot like my bator! I made mine from scratch out of an old cabinet too. Except I lined the inside with laminate to make cleaning easier. I want a new thermostat for it though. This one was impossible to calibrate so I have to set it low cause it runs way too hot left to it's own settings. The new thermostat is $100 but I need to just get it anyway. Hubby wants us to get another bator. He really wants the cabinet Brinsea Bator that will hold 190 eggs (mine holds 94). For some reason he thinks we can make money selling chicks!

It would be nice to offset the feed bills a little though.

Kim, sorry you are hurting so bad!!! I've never had a broken bone. In fact except for my back I've been pretty darn lucky. It sounds terribly painful! Maybe you need to just give in and take a pain pill. I sure hope you feel better soon but I assume bones take some time to heal.

I still haven't read all the rules for the Easter hatch. Need to do that when I get time. Next week should be an easier week than this coming one. So much to finish up right now.

Thanks Debi, That would be so great but I haven't heard back from them. I had to email them through Craigslist because there was no phone # to call so the ball is in their court. They are probably already gone...darn!!!. I only saw a bantam pair at the show for sale & I am soooooo not into bantam at this point but I think Olivia has decided to show & she was asking me about Cochins............Hmmmmmmmm. Sarah's girls show Cochin (Bantams)& we were looking at them with them at the Fresno show but Oliis determined to show my Orpington which really surprises me because she is as big as Oli's Australorps & Oli is afraid to hold them. Maybe Monet needs to come & train her........Peer pressure can be a good thing sometimes. It makes us drive ourselves beyond.
I will let you know if I heard from the Dominique people in Aptos.

I made the mistake of penning my Pene roo in with a Cuba hen a couple of months ago, only to find out that Cubas hens are more agressive than the roos and she killed my Pene. I'm also kind of worried since I will be letting my other birds out to free range and my Sumatras are very flighty. I have one side of my yard with a 4ft fence and don't want to lose them, so need to know how others deal with them. I'd hate to have them not get along with the others, so kind of protective of them. The Silver Phoenix are separate and so are my Games although the Game hens will be fine with my other breeds, but they've been in with my Kelso roo for a while now but even though they usually lay like crazy, they haven't since moult.

I'm going to have 2 hoop coops. One for roos and one for hens. Ill also have at least 4 breeds that have to be separated, but trying to make that a minimum. I have bantams, but those will probably stay penned by breed since I have similar egg color with most of them. Just need to figure out a way to have more breeds together and less going on out there. I want thing easy to move when I move and as little to have to move as I can.

I slept most of yesterday. Went out last night about 9pm and topped off feeders and waterers and found my 2 best Lionhead bucks dead. I had bought those 3 rabbits that I thought might be Chinchillas and they were so thin. I had kept them inside untill they looked better, but they all died. I'm terrified they made my others sick. I can't believe I've been losing rabbits. Last week and week before I lost my oldest Lionhead doe who was close to 6 years old and then one of my newer does and breeds. I'm sick about it. I always quarantine, but these were not done as long as I usually do. I don't know what I was thinking, but my babies are sure paying for it.

I swear there's something else going on with my arm. I've had broken bones, but nothing that could be cast and this is hurting more. I hope once it heals they don't have to rebreak it and start over. I just have a horrible feeling since that's the way my life goes.

I think since Dakotah is off at his dad's and Makayla is with her mom until a little later, I may go to that auction and see what kinds of supplies they have. Not buying anything living for now until my yard is done the way I want and I know I'm not bringing home health problems. Although before Kayla started kindergarten I was able to look at things closer and longer and talk to the vets. Hmmmm I did chores last night, so maybe I should just get a shower and go look around. Better hurry though so I can check things out.

I don't trust any game or Oriental breeds with any bird of either sex. Games or Oriental hens are very capable killers of any chickens.....male or female....or each other.

That's what I needed to know. My Game hens have always been in the general poulation with no problem, but the Cuba was an unfortunate learning exerience. Just didn't want to take a chance with any of these. I do have 1 hen out with the others and my Game x Marans pullets with no problem. I figured my Phoenix should be if for no other reason the hens are small and the roo, I'm not taking a chance with his tail. Same with the Sumatra. Game roos I know better after 5 or 6 months.

So since I have those breeds as trios I'll keep them that way. The Game roo, I'll be replacing after I get eggs out of my girls. Don't know why they aren't laying. They are my best layers of any of the breeds. I only have 5 hens in with him, so once they start up I should have good fertility, but I like to switch out the Game roos for different colors.

Walt,
I was hoping to get you to take a look at my Orpington pullet while at the Fresno show but you seemed too busy everytime I tried to talk to you. You must be very busy I know................ We learned about a "stub" but that was all. I was hoping to learn how good she was according to "type" & other things. friend of mine had a judge's note on her card that said Body- . She got RV but was hoping to learn more. Obviously were are beginners at showing I hope to not get discouraged but rather learn more & keep going. She feels the same way. Do they have show workshops or maybe a video of basic we can learn from?
Thanks

I'm always busy at these shows. Next time say something and I might be able to break away for a bit. The best thing to do is look at the winning birds. If it is a female compare it to my profile picture, that female is as closed to perfect as you would want.
