CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

That's great Julie. We will need to keep track of these plans & plan on it for sure. Jules in Atwater too & maybe others. I drove up there last September to the Hierloom Poultry & Seed Exposition in Santa Rosa with a couple of friends. It isn't a bad ride with the right company & "chicken lovers" are always the right company......LOL

I would definitely be interested in that, and if I'm up that way and she hasn't sold him yet, I've got my eye on a nice cockerel that shanshan has for sale. I need to learn more about selecting birds to show, breeding for desirable traits, and conditioning. I've been flying by the seat of my pants so far, and it would be a treat to get to pick the brain of someone so knowledgeable.

As an aside, I had to process a turkey on Friday before I went down to the Fresno show (too many jakes in the pen,) and I stir fried him last night with a ton of vegetables. It was amazing, the first heritage turkey I've had. Lots of flavor and not tough at all, although that could have been the way I cut the meat up for stir frying. And he was a little young yet. I've got two more to do pretty soon, so I might roast one, but as parts, they're fantastic. I'll be hatching out more just for eating, that's for sure.

Okay then. If you are like me & have agreat husband that happens to want nothing to do with all this running around to shows & such then we can go to that together.
This morning is turning out to be great fun. I came home from Stockton with all the eggs from the egg show there. Denny left her's behind too. Except for a few I didn't know who's were who's but I stuck them in the incubator WOW....babies everywhere. I had caged my American Orpingtons so I know those babis & zip tied them right away but all the others are a mystery. There are 2 light silvery ones & a blue one & 3 I know are Golden Cuckoo Marans from Harris5 but there are multiple ones that are dark that I will have to grow out & watch to identify. The 3 yellow ones I am assuming are my Wheaten Marans........LOL. They all came from dark eggs that we took to enter in the egg show. Peter Ovalle helped us pick out our best & now they are chickies......LOL

I could do that but I don't have time to travel too far for the next few months. Maybe you can find some place up here.

What kind of facility would work best for you? What would you require/need?

Someone's ranch or the fairgrounds? Do you have a suggestion?

When I hear Sonoma, all that comes to mind is winery.

What variety was he, and how old?

Someday, I would like to have turkeys. They would need to be good to eat, and being able to cook select parts quickly without the meat being tough is a plus.

That's funny you mention the Heirloom Expo. I won a contest for free tickets to this year's event, I am looking forward to going.

Congrats on winning tickets! We went last year and had a fantastic time! We are planning on it again this year! We camped at the KOA in Petaluma and are planning on staying there again next year. It would be fun to have a group site! They also have really nice cabins for anyone who is not into camping.
