CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

Woke up to 2 chicks out and a pipped egg. I have 12 due today. I don't think my neighbor's eggs are doing anything, but sure hope they hatch. So sad. I set 120 eggs for Easter and only got 6 chicks. Today I have 12 eggs and 2 out and 1 pip. Why do my smaller hatches seem to do better?? Oh and I have 40 eggs to set that have been sitting here for 5 days. I ran out of room, but I can't set them at the moment since there's a hatch going on.

120 eggs and only 6 hatched? Has anyone taken a look at your incubators or how you are hatching to help? Seems like one of us should be able to help you figure out how to get better hatches....

Are the eggs fertile? Shipped? etc...maybe a quick list of what is going on and we can put our heads together

Sorry you didn't get more chicks Kim. You can come & get more eggs if you need them.

Crazy night here. The power went out alittle after 3:30 & was out til 10:am I was worried about babies just out of the incubator yesterday & my week olds & week & 1/2 olds all in the brooders with no lights. The incubators both are full but they seem to have maintained preety well. I didn't open any doors & when the power came back on they were back to normal very quickly & i have chicks hatching in one. We have been here over 33 years & I can't remember ever being out of power that long. We could see the power crews down the road. I don't know what the problem was. Maybe someone hit a pole or a transformer went out. The only thing lost was a couple of Yokohama chicks just hatched yesterday & in a little brooder of their own & they climbed into their water dish & drowned or got too chilled. Everyone else seems okay. I was a nervous wreck worried about everyone & it poured rain besides & I had a new batch of older chicks I had juct put outdoors yesterday...........They are all fine. Oh Oh... I hear thunder. I am going to go check everything out.

From what I recall from the Easter Thread, there was a temp spike in the sportsman. That is probably what happened to them. It probably needs a new thermostat. I was looking at the Dickies and the manual said it has two thermostats. The first one you set for hatching temp. there is one in the back that stops at 102. If the incubator goes to 102, even briefly, replace the first thermostat. If it goes to 104 replace the second one too.

It said to replace the thermostat when there is any temp spike, even if it starts working again. The manual said any spike means it is bad and it will spike again.

I hope this helps,

Ron

Wow I so want to be OFF THE GRID, having had that happen twice this winter... glad things weren't too bad

Not a heat spike in the Sportsman. I had a huge humidity spike. 91%! I'm lucky they all didn't drown.

The pipped egg was a Game chick!!!

Cheryl a LOT of the eggs were shipped.

You know what gets me? I had great hatches and could hatch out anything 2 years ago and I think since I started sending more time on this site, I've jinxed myself. I have a horrible time with Marans. I used to hatch them out so well I was selling them. NOW I'd just like to get enough to replenish my flock. My SPPRs will pip internally and die, my Favs same thing. I barely get a pip out of a FBCM. I had a lot of infertile eggs at first with the Phoenix, but this time they developed and didn't hatch. But the eggs I've been shipping have been doing great. My project birds seem to be the only ones that really hatch like crazy. My Sportsman is one of the old wooden ones with an acrylic door. The thermostat went out the day Bill died and my daughter changed it for me. She had no idea what she was doing, but she was trying to help as much as she could and I was in no shape to do anything. I'm going to pull off the form stripping Bill and I put around the door as soon as I can figure out what I did with it. I was putting things away back then that I still can't find. I was just in too much of a fog. I had bought a new heating element for it, but the old one is working. My problem is I've had to hand turn everything in there. My turner slips and I've had some eggs drop so I keep the turner off.

I haven't pulled the Easter hatch eggs since mine hatched 2 days late. I'm kind of hoping there's some stragglers in there and I don't want to take the time to clear them out since eggs are hatching right now.

Why Sharks Circle You Before Attacking...

Two great white sharks swimming in the ocean spied survivors of a sunken ship.
"Follow me son" the father shark said to the son shark and they swam to the mass of people.

"First we swim around them a few times with just the tip of our fins showing."
And they did.

"Well done, son! Now we swim around them a few times with all of our fins showing."
And they did.

"Now we eat everybody."
And they did.

When they were both gorged, the son asked,
"Dad, why didn't we just eat them all at first?
Why did we swim around and around them?"

His wise father replied,

"Because they taste better without the poop inside!"

No need to thank me. I just try to learn something new every day

Their in a cooler and I've been collecting them. I've had eggs hatch from the fridge, 3 week old eggs hatch that I forgot about once and the eggs from this hatch I have no idea how long my neighbor had the eggs, but the other I collected that day and just set them along.

I had a lot of shipped eggs for the Easter hatch. I did 2 swaps and they did get chicks from some of my eggs. I got nada. I had some eggs shipped to me, some I bought, some I didn't and not a single egg hatched. I needed some of those darn it, like my Black Tail Buff Japs. Poor little Lowrider is lonely. No Silkies, no Marans of any kind, just nothing and only 6 of my own eggs.

My humidity is at 61 right now in the Sportsman and the little pipper isn't out yet. I'd try to bring it up a couple of % but I hate to open the cabinet. Sure hope at least a couple of those Games hatch. It would be nice to at least hatch out a pair.

Older eggs can hatch just the odds of them hatching are lower. I've read a few university studies that showed viablity definitely goes down after 10 days. But they should be fine for 5 more days anyway. I've had older eggs hatch too but the amount that hatch goes down and I don't like to do that anymore.

Oh those were the yokos you just said you were going to put in a different brooder so they wouldn't get smothered by the LF huh? Poor babies. Still, good thing you didn't lose more with the power out that long!

DH and I have been drooling over some wind turbines we have been looking at. We would love to combine solar and wind. We would still be connected to the grid so we can make a few bucks back though.

I added a few more to my sig line too. Plus I posted some one liners on the NV thread. There's a couple of groaners in there though!
