Kim I am sorry you lost your Delaware. I lost a Wheaten Marans a few days ago & we are having a heat wave too. I am losing growing out chicks to an oppossum too. My son is trying to trap him & goes out nightly with his gun but has not been able to get him yet. He has killed several already this season but so far this one is escaping him. What a bummer. I have lost a Coronation Sussex & a Dominique so far & dread each new day fearing more bad news. I am ready to camp out there myself with my trusty ol" gun that I have always used for gophers & other unwanted critters though the years. When my kids were growing up I was the "Annie Oakley" of the place but my grown son took over that job years ago......LOL
Karen, So sorry that you are losing chicks to a crafty opossum. My dog has killed 4 young ones in our backyard this spring plus DH dispatched another one that was climbing on the top of our coop in broad daylight. They were big enough to be on their own and I'm hoping that the mama has moved on to someone else's yard. They are smarter than they look and can get into small openings. I made my DH build a Fort Knox coop. He thought that I was crazy but we haven't lost a chicken yet to a wild predator when we obviously have opossums and raccoons prowling the yard.

Karen, I agree with Debi that a dog is the best weapon against opossums. Even though my dogs sleep in the house, they'll alert to one in the yard. You might try a trap. Not sure what bait would be best.

So sorry to hear about all the birds everyone's lost :( I've been hosing down the pens to cool everyone down, fortunately the fog has come over the hill so it will be a bit cooler this week I think

My husband said a red tailed hawk came down into our yard and landed on my garden fence, thankfully the chickens dove under the bushes. If he hadn't been in the backyard I think the hawk would have had grabbed one of my girls. Crazy!

Hey Sunny what dates is Hot August Nights? I may have to drive up. I haven't been to that since before I met Bill.
It's August 7th to the 12th this year but most of the events are on Thurs, Fri and Sat. I LOVE Hot August Nights! It's one of the best things about living here! Actually they have a ton of great events all summer long. I thought I would never have anything to do cause I don't gamble (well, that's not true, I do like a lotto ticket now and then) but there are lots of great activities here. It's super fun.

You should definitely come up for HAN Kim!!! That would be a blast and no snow this time of year!

The Rib Cookoff is my second fav followed by the Hot Air Ballon's Dawn Patrol. Awww Man! Now I feel like I'm being unfair to all the other great events (like Art town and Street Vibrations...). Jeez!!! Here's a link to the big ones...

Just in case anyone is curious.

One of the peeps! It's a male, I'm almost positive. He ran over to a garden (sp?) snake and looked at it closely with his little tail feathers sticking straight up.
