CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

Do you guys all know we are having a Chickenstock Party at The Omelet Ranch in Clayton CA (SF east bay) next Sunday July 15th?

You all are invited. Just PM me your email address so we can get you details.

I sold some hatching eggs and the customer dropped the carton and some of the eggs broke but they put the remaining eggs under the broody. Should they worry about broken membranes with just dropping the carton? I figure shipping has to be worse then dropping a carton right?

Dee I'm glad you got a little warm weather for a change. This days Washington weather would drive me bonkers. I was in the Bay Area this week and was freezing by the time I left. I used to laugh when my sister and her kids would visit us there from Tracy and they'd wear shorts. They'd complain as soon as the sun went down. LOL

Pam I dropped some eggs in once and broke most, but got 2 out of the 3 that were left to hatch. I had just collected them and boom, right in the floor. Hopefully your customer will get some hatches.

Liz, thr auction is every monday on 7th street at the Modesto Fleamarket. They start at 11am, so you need to be there early enough before if you're selling.

Cheryl, I'm still trying to find out if I get some ME time, so I can go to the meetup. I have too many kids and grandkids to have a real life lately. We also need to start working on one out here.

I'm pooped! I used to be able to go non stop and today I've been on the couch. I'm just plain tired. I spent 2 days at the fair in Pleasanton and yesterday at Great America. My daughter, SIL and the grandkids think I should take one move trip there this week and take grandkids. Only if they want to push grandma around in a wheelchair. Today and yesterday were supposed to be the days I try and finish digging up the back yard so I can get that thing together and I'm beat. This getting old stuff sucks! Still, there are more fairs coming up and I'm sure I'll be going to at least one more. What a glutten for punishment.

This is a post from a FB friend Arbuckle folks...know anyone (maybe you?) who has some extra room for Stonyford livestock being evacuated from the fires? Please call Colusa animal control at 458-0200 and tell them how you can help, or tell a friend! Animal Control is maintaining a list of potential shelters. They are starting in Willows and working their way down I-5, from what I understand. Also there may be some family pets needing help...Please call if you can

I understand your humor very well.

Often times when family come out to visit they are wearing shorts and sleeveless tops as the climate is much more humid and warm inland naturally. They arrive out here where the marine air is 5-10 degrees cooler. I chuckle to myself and try to remind them before they come out again to dress warmer. We have had the wind pick up the last few days blowing very cold air upon us. Now it is overcast as well. I am wearing sweats today to stay warm.

I have been laying low the last several days anyway as I have been ill. When I read your more recent post I see you are hanging out on the couch as well. Feel better soon.

BTW, things did not work out for me with Carrie. She is a wonderful person so don't get me wrong here please. I ran into a problem because my chicken tractor was custom built for smaller 6-7 lb. birds. She weighed her flock of BA's for me and the hens weight start at 7.1 lbs. and go up to 9 lbs. There is no guarantee of course that the chicks I purchased from her would be of the 7 lb. size rather than the 9 lb. adult hen size. That is the problem I ran into. I am sure her chickens are the most gorgeous healthy BA's but I will need to insure the ones I get are of the smaller size. I don't want my hens to be cramped for room when they roost. I want to insure I have happy hens. So there you have it. I was very disappointed but will continue looking. She was very gracious about the whole thing after spending so much time answering my inquiries. So then I felt very sad I couldn't do business with her in the end. I wonder why all the hatcheries advertise the BA hens at 6 or 6.5 lbs. Maybe I will have to try a hatchery chicks after all? I think it was Ron that purchased some BA's from Cackle hatchery. Maybe I should explore this further? I just dunno. Well, I have time to figure it out at least. Looks like next spring rather than this summer will be the thing now.

Take care of yourself. Treat yourself good and do not be a glutton for punishment please.

Hey everyone! My girls are doing well and have started laying! Eleanor is my Ameraucana and top of the pecking order. She is a character indeed, a bossy buffers to everyone. Hermione is a black sex link and seems to be the low girl on the totem pole, but also my sweetest and most docile. Ginger is a silver laced red Wyandotte, and is very flighty around us, but is so very intelligent! :) they get along famously with each-other and love to mow our lawn! ;)

Today I got three eggs, a teal, a copper-brown and a pink! Any help on which of the girls is laying the non blue eggs (Eleanor is assuredly laying the teal!)

I have pictures to share of my girls and their little gifts, but I can't figure out how to post them from my iPhone! :(

Hi and welcome to the thread. I'll add you to the first post.

OK we have Eleanor out of the way, but the other 2 may be harder. Wyandottes usually lay a brown egg, but it can also be pale and more pink. With the black sex-link you're kind of in the same boat as having an EE. Depending on what the mix is to get them, you're looking at anything from pink to brown also. You may have to just keep an eye on who goes into the nest box and see what they leave you.

I'm technically challenged since I don't own any of the fancy stuff. I have a cell phone. Period. LOL There are others here that will be able to help, but I've read a lot of posts where people have had a hard time posting pics with iPhones.

We can't wait though to see pics of your girls.
