CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

Sorry you are feeling so tired Kim but honestly I understand. My mind is so much better at thinking of things to do than my body is at doing them.....LOL. It was a blast while it lasted though & I can't complain about not having done things. I have been lucky but I am at a point now that I know its time to slow way down.
My new beehives are coming Monday I think & I am researching, getting ready, to raise worms. My son & I have started fishing & buying night crawlers is ridiculous.
I plan to have a few rabbit again for the worms & fertilizer & meat. They are easier to process than chickens that's for sure. I won't get many......I hope rabbit math is not like Chicken math.....LOL

Hoping your "icky" is gone today. Mornings are my best time ........a new outlook on life...........sometimes a slow aching body but a fresh happy mind.
What a circle we create....... the rabbits for the worms & fertilizer........ the worms for chickens & fishing..... the casings for the garden to grow greens for the chickens.... the greens refuse for the worms...... & round & round we go.....LOL
Have a good day Kim

I recently found this source for worms, although I have yet to place an order.
Thought I'd pass it along in case it is helpful.

Thank you so much. I haven't ordered my worms yet because I am still making decisions but was wondering where to order them. That was the next phase of my research.....LOL
You're welcome. They are in SoCal and it looks like ordering and shipping will be easy (or picking up if you live close). I'll be interested to know if you get anything from them, and which type of worm.
(first it was chickens and cleaning the coops, now it's growing worms to feed them, my brothers still can't believe I took up this hobby).

Have you decided what kind of worms yet? Red worms maybe?

I haven't built my mealies back up yet. For some reason I keep forgetting until I see someone raising them or asking about them. At least they multiple fast, so maybe I'll get a round to it this week. I need to make a space outside for containers for them, but seems I'm always working on something for the rabbits or the chickens.

I lost my little Lionhead stud, Bun Jovi . He was looking really tired lately and I hope my last breedings from him took. I've had him for almost 4 years and he was 3 when I got him, so he was around for a good amount of time. He was my escape artist. I'd have them all locked up, but he could get out. Found out he was using the feeder, so finally changed it. I'd go out to feed the animals and he'd be out there with the free rangers. If I dumped the water buckets, he'd go over to look for water. He didn't have to be thirsty, he just didn't want those buckets empty. I'd refill them and he'd come running to get the first drink and I could catch him. Not every time, but most. He liked laying under the lemon trees and once I found him in a nesting box with 2 hens that were laying. They must have really had their minds on laying, because Jovi wouldn't even bother them. He always wanted to be petted or held when he was caged and had the cutest little personality. I'm going to miss him. Like I said, I hope these last breedings took. He mad very pretty, very tiny babies.

I did immediately take a look at the site you sent. I am looking for night crawlers though & I didn't see them listed. I have dome the meal worms before & they were easy but I am looking for big fishing worms now so am research dual purpose composting/fishing bail worms. The red wigglers I had for years & years are too small but great for just composting. There are 3 types of night crawlers I am researching right now. I already have the bins & am going to build 2 towers/tubes today for the garden areas around my house. You Tube is so invigorating.....LOL

I had good luck with meal worms in a big old aquarium in the front porch but after a long time I abandoned it. I am so undisciplined some time......

Sorry for your loss. What is a Lionhead?

I heard someone say they worked hard to live a simple life. And I think that's the truth of it.

Same here. I had so much else going on, although it sure would be nice to have them for the birds right now. I remember that tank you had. You told me the story of thinking they had all died and your son said something to you much later about the worms in the tank. LOL

I'm waiting to see if my poult is going to hatch. So nervous, since I've never gotten them to hatch since I've been at this house. I just took a few EE chicks to the auction. I'd like to make enough money to buy feed, but the fact that I don't have to feed them is a plus. I have mostly bantams hatching and they're all pures, so I figured the EEs had to go. I need to start separating the LF chicks from the bantams, since those suckers are starting to grown. The Sussex were already bigger than 2 week old bantams when I started and they crushed one of my black AM cockerels, so I'm going to get them into a different brooder today. I had a very broody Game hen. Nothing she has sat on has hatched this year and when she saw me open the brooder, she came running, jumped up on the side and started calling chicks. If I didn't have so many gopher holes and fire ant hills, I'd let her raise some, but for now she's gonna have to just hatch some decent eggs for herself.
