CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

Aaron & I wing tagged both groups of the chicks yesterday. The hatch from the 8th & the hatch from the 15th. We then put them all out in the grow out pen on the covered patio out front. I kept the four Mottled Japanese inside in the brooder though. They were holding their own with the 15th's hatch but they are so much smaller. Those 4 can keep each other company but all they others needed to get out. I didn't want all of the clean up of the confined spaces. The grow out bins have deep bedding & open air. I did worry all night though that I should have set them up with a light but they did fine. I checked them first thing this morning.
I went to Hilmar Lumber today & bought pipe for 2 worm towers (You Tube). I think I will try 2 different worms in each & then a third kind in the 4 stacked bins & see who works the best.

Worm tower??? I need to look that one up. That is after I get some sleep. My poult pipped early in the morning and then nothing, so I started helping it about 10pm, after I candled and saw it was not taking up shell. It hadn't even pipped through the membrane, so I carefully started a zip and made sure it could breath. I saw the very tip of the beak and could see the membrane fitting really tight. Been checking and working with it about every hour and it's mostly out, but looks so tired. I can see it's big ole feet and man what a difference when a wing slips out. LOL Even the couple of LF chicks I still have from the Easter hatch are dinky in comparison. Kind of nervous that "SHE" will do a Godzilla on them! LOL

I was up till about 6am and fell asleep befor my poult was fully hatched. I just knew it! Laying on it's side and the umbilical was herniated. I've given it some Polyvisol and used With Hazel on the hernia, but it's just laying there. I so wanted this bird. I don't know if it will make it, but I'm trying to help it. I want to

Avian influenza surveillance ongoing in California
Animal health agencies conduct survey within a 10-kilometer radius of farm affected by avian influenza
Release Date:

By Roy Graber, Staff Reporter
Crews from the USDA and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) have been actively monitoring for avian influenza in California's Stanislaus County, after birds in a layer flock of Japanese quail in tested positive for a low pathogenic form of H5 avian influenza in late April. No new cases of avian influenza have been found since the initial outbreak was reported.
“We continue to survey in the area, but at this point we have just the one outbreak in the one location in Stanislaus County, California,” said Steve Lyle, spokesman for CDFA. “We are encouraged at what we haven’t found at this point, and we continue to not detect the disease in other poultry in the area.”
Inspections have been conducted at properties within a 10-kilometer radius of the affected farm, which was placed under quarantine and has been depopulated. The farms within that 10-kilometer radius include both commercial and non-commercial poultry, Lyle said.
The layer house affected by avian influenza contained about 56,000 adult quail. The farm also housed about 39,000 quail in a brooder house. Nine additional buildings on the premises housed about 21,000 Peking ducks for egg production.
The source of the California avian influenza infection has not yet been determined, but Lyle said that is part of an ongoing investigation.
