CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

I knew I had heard $4 to $7. Wish I could get that in my neighborhood, but lots of chicken owners and the ferals leave eggs all over the place. LOL

I take my eggs with me to the a the Garden Club meetings. Most of the ladies there are from town & are impressed with the colors & size of the eggs. I think it is a novelty to them. I know some of them don't even plan to eat them but show them to their friends. I always donate a dozen or more to the raffle table & put a dozen or more on the Market table for sale 1/2 for $2 . I give a dozen to a neighborhood friend that is always dropping of some type of vegetation at my place. She has a huge garden & shares with me for the chickens. The ones I have left I keep at my seat & sell first come first serve.

Karen, my hatch started yesterday. Of course the Mottled Japs were the first out, followed by the bantam AMs and EEs. Today I still have babies hatching and I have at least 3 of the Lt Sussex out and the FBCM also hatched. One of the turkey eggs didn't start, but the other is still going. Really hope I finally get one to hatch. Is humidity the same as for the chicks or do I need to do something else. I know breeds differ. BTW, I think you said this was a Red Bourbon. Is that right?

Anyway, lots of chicks from this hatch and Easter. I moved 2 from 2 months ago outside. I need to go check on them, but I'm scared. LOL I need to do some repairs on the locker brooder, so as soon as it cools down, I need to replace a hinge and the whole light fixture. Both are sitting on the kitchen table and I'm waiting till I can stand to be out there long enough to do it. Everybody out tonight. LOL This brooder sits on my covered patio, so I won't have to smell these babies after tonight. Oh and then there are also the quail. Sticky little things. LOL

I need a Bantam Am rooster for Denny. She wants to play & has a hen or so.
I used the same hatching for the turkeys as I did for the chicks I think. It's been awhile.
The turkey eggs are Royal Palms. L/S are usually strong like the Delawares.
I know what you mean about the smell. I still need to do one of the brooders in the porch. If I don't hurry the other one will need it again before I get to this 2nd one.
Good Luck

Never got to the brooder and the Sportsman is filling up fast. I had to help 2 of the Sussex out, but they seem to be doing fine. Man those suckers are MONSTERS! They're huge. Make my almost 2 week old bantams really look tiny. LOL

Denny let me know when the Easter hatch happened. Not sure yet who is and who isn't a roo from the black/lavender splits, but my chocolates are auto sexed this generation, so I have a couple for her. Thought the 2 that have hatched so far with this hatch were a pair, but nope.................PULLETS! YAY! LOL They sure did look black at first though. I need to hatch as many out as I can and grow them out. Next generation I'll get chocolate cockerels too, so I want to work hard on my sure thing, this generation.

Not seeing any of my Modern Games hatching or my Silkied AMs. The AMs usually hatch pretty well. Glad I have several cooking for the next hatch.

I had a problem with a coop, so I used one of the big tub brooders for my Moderns. Have to build them a new coop and soon, cause I could sure use that for the quail. I've had such terrible luck with my quail. I can sell them and they do fine for other people, but they just kind of lounge and go through times with no eggs and then a bunch. They usually hatch out really well, but this year I get anywhere from 1 to maybe 5 or 6. Went to feed a couple of days ago and one of the pens was open. Both little rooster were just laying around and all the hens were missing. I haven't seen or heard them anywhere and between Rascal and his feral family, I'm hoping cats didn't get them. Kind of hard to get eggs with no hens. I tend to hold onto them to long too. I lost one that I've had since the beginning of the quail thing. She hadn't laid an egg since last year, but she hung out with the rest of the free loaders. Hope I didn't upset her when I told her to start laying so I could eat her children. So I'm down to maybe 4 hens total and maybe 7 roos. I think I need to add some hens so I have eggs until the new ones are older. I saw some really big ones the other day. Might have to go pick up a few.
