CALIFORNIA The Whole State thread

Ok, don't listen to a word I say!! I went back to my PM's to confirm age in these girls and I'm reading the old message and this is what papabrooder wrote "They are direct from tom culpeppers birds ( the flock I have are his originals) he was steward of the wade jean flock and like I said before, you would not believe the color of the eggs they are laying at the end of the season! "!!!! So embarrassed!! Jeff must think im a wackadoodle if he read any of that!!! Where the heck did I get Bev Davis out of that????? Anyway, they were hatched 9/1 so no matter where they came from they aren't laying soon!!!!!
Happens to all of us. Happens to me way too often!

Nah I do that all the time. "You act just like your dad!, Oh wait, not you act like HER dad!" Kids. Gotta love em.

Just kidding btw, but it sounded good! LOL

Sunny I had POL FBCMs for 5 months! Any day now, any day. Boom! almost 10 months old. OH! And then there was the AM that laid her first egg at 11 months! Freeloaders!
Haha! Yeah I know that drill! Been there many times. 2 of my favorite breeds that I have now are famous for waiting ages to start laying. The marans and the ams. It does seem like they lay for a long time though. The production breeds, that start laying so young, often fizzle out or slow way down at 2 years of age. Not so much with the marans and ams. :)

Since I'm on a roll here (just remembered how to change back to the mobile version...so much easier) I'll share some more of the Marans and a few of the rest of the EEs.

One of my two EE cockerels who need a home and just too nice to cull!

And a Cat on a Hot Tin Roof!

And the funky polish pen (and cute husband)

Cute pics! I love the polish coop! It's super cute. Your Hubby has that "I think I just stepped in chicken poo" look. LOL

When my youngest quail started laying I started putting maybe an egg a day in the incubator. These guys have been hatched over the last 4 days, so I have my first babies of 2013.

Yeah! Or soooooo

OK I've been turning my backyard for ages. Seems like I spend more time healing from breaks and what have you than working. So today I have oodles of chickens out in the yard and I was supposed to be working on 2 pens, but I'm going to have to wait till monday

So I raked up all the hay and stuff the birds have found to completely trash the yard and I still have a good sized atch about 20x20 to turn over. I just couldn't get a shovel into it much. My Cuckoo Marans hen Cancan, started following the shovel, so I'd move over a bit and she started scratching. Cancan is the only survivor of my first cat attack on chicks and she is missing an eye, but she can find a bug like nobody's business. I'd move over and she was right there. Too many times I was affraid I was going to get her with the shovel. Some of the other birds started running over when they noticed her gobbling up works so I dig holes where I could and let them scratch through the area. Since they had managed to scratch up areas around where I had finished before I'm kind of hoping they'll turn that area for me. Then I'm going to break their little hearts when they get penned up long enough for me to get a lawn in. After that I'm going to let one breed a day go out to forage, so they don't do too much damage, but I want to finally have somewhat of a yard that we can enjoy. Haven't really had that here.

I went through pens today and decided I need to get rid of some things. I have 8 birds that are going, so if anyone needs one I have the following. Lavender bantam AMs, a lavender egg project cockerel, EE cockerel, a pair of blue copper Marans with clean legs and my little buddy Winston who is a really pretty bantam Wellie. If anyone is interested in any of them, let me know. I also need to get some pics of a pair of bantams I ended up with.
They are supposed to be blue Marans someone was working on, but I don't know. Maybe they are. Depending on what they are I'll figure out if they stay or go.

The Games were back and yep, they got my Sussex roo this time. I'm so mad. I had one caught in a poutry net that was hanging on one side of the raised bed, but he got loose before I could get through the net.

The one that's courting the hen that thinks she lives out front snuck in and molested one of my FBCMs before I could get to the other end of the yard and one (I have NO IDEA how he did it) knocked over a full bucket of Summer Blend scratch that I really couldn't afford right now, but go to condition my birds. They're conditioned NOW! These are NOT big birds, but he managed to knock it off of another bucket and onto the patio. My biggest birds have never been able to do that, so I'm confused how he did it. I'm going to try and rig up something with the netting and see if I can catch these pests. I love Games, but I don't have room for them, can't afford to feed them at least not more than I already do and they get my birds worked up and attack my roos and mate with my hens. I'll have to keep you all posted on my chicken war.
