When I meant "up north," I meant in the UP, Michigan lol. It is kind of like Northern California, but way colder! I really wanted to find property up in Northern Ca but I don't think we can afford it in the time frame we are looking at. We really want to start this homesteading soon and that is the place we both fell in love with. I might have some real estate related questions though (
don't we all when it comes to buying property?), because I have never bought property before. I'm only in my early 20s and my SO is in his late 20s. But our budget is under $50000, and there is plenty of property up there in that price range.
At the very least you will have your daughter to guide you! That is awesome. I know what you mean by the RV; we were going to do that, but the cold and snowy winters up there require we have good shelter while we build, so we are looking at mobile homes.
Good luck with building your coop! I find recycling to be the best way to build "new" things. I wish I could have found some old pallets or free building wood while we were making our coops. Can't wait to see yours and your new additions to your flock in the new coop hehe.
I just saw the video....That is just very sad. And when they showed one of the chickens in a crate full of chickens, it was making a crying sound. How terrible

My sound is out on my computer and, for the first time, I'm glad that it is. Seeing the poor things is bad enough but hearing them cry along with seeing them would be so much worse.

You're moving to Michigan by choice? That's the only place I ever lived where I cried every day because I hated it so bad. We lived in Holly for a short time when I was in junior high. Maybe it was because it was the 70s and I was used to the Bay Area and the people there were not very nice. I only made one friend there, so my second daughter is named after her.
And cold?? If I stood back just enough behind a 6ft snow drift I'd miss the school bus. It was that or stand in the road and have the driver run over me. LOL I sold tropical fish to aquarium shops and had like 30 tanks. Four days before we moved back here the power was off all night and my fish froze. Luckily I was able to save most by thawing them out. I had bugged my mom and stepdad for years about wanting to live where it snowed again, but after Michigan I only want to visit for a short time. brrrr
I'm broke now, but we used to do RE investing and I do wish I had bought some of the houses that I found there. Problem was they would have been flipped or rentals and no one made enough out there so no profit at the time. I hope you like it better than I did. I want to go slightly north from here, but that's as north as I'll go in my old age. I never want to live that cold again. I admit that it was pretty. We had lots of acreage and I did hate having to give away my Skidoo. hehe
I'd move to Washington if it didn't snow or rain so much. I've always loved it there, but only because I spent about half of every summer there growning up. Heck I'd move to Tahoe. I love to see that place with snow all over, but if I stay a week I'm ready to come home on day 4. I'm a wuss.
Me too! 2 feet of snow is the most I can deal with so Reno is as far north as I go. It's even too cold for me here so we are looking to move much further south when we retire.
We would like to move further south as well but that means we would have to choose the southwest because I do not really like humidity. That is one reason why I want to live next to Lake Superior. hehe
I know what you mean about the snow. But the thing is, there is lots of water there and that is a big concern for me right now. If we buy something out here (the weather is nice enough down here), that would mean hooking up to the city water or digging a well or bringing in our own water. Those are all expensive choices. I lived in IL and I feel like the only difference would be the amount of snow up there. The only reason why I didn't want to live in IL anymore is because I was sick of having to move the car whenever there was street sweeping, lol. We lived in Chicago about 7 miles south of downtown so there was very little parking to be found. But if we go back there, we'd have to deal with that again. My SO's dad has a friend who moved to the UP from IL. He says, "The winter here suuuccks but I wouldn't trade this place for the world."
About WA. When my brother was stationed in the army base near Tacoma we visited him a few times. I remember it was always dreary looking every time. We also almost got lost somewhere in the mountains in N. Oregon...and I think it was only sunny for 30 mins when we were there, too. But I love the alpines! I love greenery. I would move to Oregon as well but the properties are too expensive for us.

Well buy yourself a reeeeally warm winter coat and some really warm boots and you'll be fine. If scientists can brave the antarctic with the right gear I'm sure the right cold weather gear will carry you through Michigan's winters just fine.
We lived next to a lake and would go fishing all the time, like daily in the summer, because it froze over in the winter. That was the other thing. Mosquitos! I'm so allergic to them that the only place I ever really got to go was the ER. Those suckers are unreal. From Amazon to the North Pole there I tell ya. Summers are just hot and sticky.
It's not the only state I wouldn't live in but it's the only one I've been to that I really didn't like. My stepdad was Vice President of a company that was in the car industry. They didn't send him to Hawaii like every one else. We got Michigan. I hate that he got sick and had to leave his job, but I was so happy to come home and so was my mom. The cool part was they had company cars and the tracks went to the edge of our property. Their cars were delivered by train! They had like 3 and 0 miles if I remember right. Was cool to get them that way, but man. They even blocked the road though. It wasn't a busy area, but the main road, so there were people backed up two different times for the cars.
