My Wheatens lay a nice dark egg & I like their shape even better than the BCMs. I have told everyone that my Wheaten eggs are as dark as my old BCMs. Lucky you with the Ams...........They cam from green eggs though so go figure.....LOL

I used to live in Newcastle (Ophir Valley area). Talk about bucolic and beautiful! Yeah, love the Sierra foothills. The wildlife was incredible and my (ex) husband's weekend hunter friends were rather peeved that I wouldn't let them work the property. On the pond we'd have visiting mallards, wood ducks, canadian geese, and in the yard were wild turkey (often strutting in the driveway), pheasant, quail, rabbit and a herd of deer and a buck that would migrate down into our orchards during hunting season. Nothing like hustling out to the well house to flip the switch and encountering Ol' 5/6 (his rack) bedded down. Didn't so much like all the skunks, coons, coyotes and the mountain lion, though....

I used to go to Echo Valley Feed when the turkey chicks came in and ALWAYS took the loud ones 'cuz they were the toms. (Must be a universal guy thing...)

Congrats on all the new hatchlings that have hit the ground! (Happy happy joy joy!!!) May they grow quick and prosper...

Tossed 4 Faverolle eggs this morning. Eggtopsy showed they were duds. Have no idea really what's going on in the Wheaten Marans eggs in the incubator...guess I'll have to make a determination at lockdown via airspace and perceived eggwhite levels because right now I cannot see veins or eyes or yolks or anything... The dark shadow stuff is frustrating.

That's rare that women are color-blind. My husband is very much so with greens and browns. Good thing I'm around and can give him a wardrobe once-over before he leaves the house....it's no wonder he was a bachelor for a decade! The nice thing is he knows he's deficient in that area and, ergo, has also left the house decorating to me.... Otherwise everything would be in basic black, the one color he can truly determine.

don't forget to give them a sniff every so often, I saved myself a huge headache with my first batch by sniffing the maran eggs everytime I candled the other ones.

I'm only a tiny bit deficient, just in a little range of greens/blues. And I looked at them in the natural light today, and they are more green. Greener than some of my EE eggs, actually, but they're very pretty.

I have a question about hatching EEs and Marans. My second hatch experiment is going well. I have 3 out of 8 EE eggs hatched. The other 5 have cracks and pips. I also set 4 Marans eggs and three of them made it to lockdown. Tonight at 7:00 will be day 21.

My Question, do Marans take longer to hatch than Easter Eggers?

I am eggcited

My ameraucanas and EEs always hatched a day early and the marans were always a day or two later than them. Not sure if everyone else has had the same experience but that's what happened in every one of my hatches.

All these hatches have got me all excited!!! I need to get the bator out and ready to go for spring babies.

I had a big surprise

One hatched out black! That means not only are my buffs laying green eggs, so are some of the Lavenders!

Guess both colors need a lot of work!

Here are a couple of pictures of the 4 buff x wheaten and the 1 black lavender x wheaten chick~

Oooooh they are sooo adorable!!! I'm so glad to hear other folks had the same experiences with the marans' eggs.

I thought that black could pop up at any time from a lav parent. IDK where I heard that though. Doesn't matter they are all too too cute!!!
