My California white hen is about 1 year old as of this spring. She was laying eggs really good last fall but then winter came and they all slowed production way down. I never do anything to make them lay over winter. I like to give them a break for all their hard work. Now that it’s peak egg production season my Wyandotte’s, barred rocks, and silkie has been laying very consistently. I’ve maybe only gotten 10 eggs from her so far this season. I’ve tried givi the flock oyster shell but it’s hard to tell if they are actually eating it. As most of it ends up on the ground. As I was gather eggs the other day one of her eggs (the only white eggs I get are from her) just exploded in my hand and I didn’t even have a hard grip on it. Today I noticed her just sitting out in the yard almost like she was just taking a break. As I walked forward her she gets up and walks away like normal. She then goes into the coop and sits on a roost. So I blocked off the entrance and gave her some layer feed mixed with two tums and some water. I did this because I thought maybe she was low on calcium and needed a boost. She didn’t eat or drink anything just sat there. When I reached in to pet her she still just sat there and just stared kind of sweetly at me. I figured that maybe she wasn’t feel great so I moved her into a separate pen by herself. She is still just sitting I mixed in some meal worms to her food and she ate those. Other than not being as active as she usually is she doesn’t seem like she’s sick. And I know that it isn’t typical for her breed to be broody but I know that it can still happen but very rarely. Does anyone have an idea of what could be going on?
The one on the left is the California white the one on the right is my 5 year old leghorn it’s typical that she takes rests now and again.

This doesn't sound like broody behavior to me. It seems like she isn't feeling well. I am not well-versed in poultry ailments, so hopefully someone else can give you more useful advice. Good luck with her! :)
Maybe when I wake up in the morning she’ll have laid an egg and will be feeling better this isn’t the first time it’s happened. My vet told me to give her some tums and the only way to give them to just her is to separate her. So fingers crossed that she just need to lay an egg🤞

Definitely not common broody behavior, as @orloffer said, you usually would be seeing more growing and fluffing up as she hunkered down when you go to touch her. Hopefully a few times set her back on track for you. Is she still pooping normally? Do you feed them layer feed exclusively? How many treats/fruits /veggies/etc would you estimate make up her daily meals? 5%? 10% Higher?

Thats not broody behavior. So odd that she's having egg issues and your offering OS. Thats puzzling to me. Your offering it free choice right? What do you feed?
She needs to get Tums in her ASAP. To do so, cut one into 1/2's, or 1/4's, either is fine. Then, hold he between your legs so you can squeeze her wings and hold her still. Pinch the edges of her mouth so she opens. This will likely take a moment of fighting. Then pop in a chunk, let her swallow and repeat until all chunks are gone, and she's taken the entire Tum's.
@azygous @Wyorp Rock @Eggcessive any additional info?

I usually let them free range all day and give them layer feed when the feeder is empty. It has been a little hotter than normal this week. I don’t feed them very many treats just when we have left overs. Which isn’t a whole lot.

Yes I’ve tried mixing the oyster shell into their feed. I’ve tried putting it I to a separate feeder bucket. And none of them will eat it or they don’t eat much of it. But that’s a good idea to do chunks instead of grinding them up. I may try this and see if it makes a difference. Thank you.

How is she this morning? Did you get the Tums in her?
She seems a little better but it’s hard to tell how much tums she actually ate considering I ground them up. She seems like she’s in good sport just not super active like she was. I may try to give her some more. But I may try how latebirdsfarm suggested.

UPDATE: my hen seem better it’s been low to mid 80s here and a little unbearable. She’ll still sit and rest but she was just out in the yard running around and eating grass. My guess is that she’s just hot. I didn’t really think she was sick but I definitely feel like the heat is making her not feel the greatest. If anything else presents I’ll be back on :confused:
