Call duck hen with eye issue-HELP!

I think I will treat her with Eprinex and leave it at that. (the black dots by her eyes are not moving)
Yes she is very happy to have swimming water. She plays in it and ducks her head up and down like she is wanting a mate or something. She says rusk, rusk, rusk. She is very talkative. I think she is feeling much better now. Thanks for all your help!

Sounds like she has improved alot since she has been in your care..

great news

I have treated her with Eprinex and now all the feathers around her eyes are definitely growing back! She is so cute! I put her in with my mallard drake and once they get used to each other, and the store gets their pen covered, then they will go back to the store as a pair. Thanks for all your help!

Miss Lydia.....I have never heard of Eprinex....it kills mites and worms them too? How often can you treat with it? No need for dusting if you use this? And where on the bird do you put the drops...back of the shoulders or neck like a dog and frontline?

Daze333....So glad you could help her! Kudos to you for stepping up for her!

It's Epernix pour on and yes it kills both, depending on what part of the country you live in is how often you would treat. moist humid climates maybe 3 X a year, but if your ducks are getting water to swim in maybe not that often. Chickens deff. I use Epernix on my chickens 3 times a year. Spring, summer and fall. My ducks and goose usually only in winter. Thats when swimming water around here is frozen solid. I have never seen a parasite in my ducks/gooses poop. their body temp is so high it's hard for worms to live inside of them.

Well I have put neosporin on her eyes several times. And when I look closely there are little black dots in her bald spots around her eyes. Is this new feathers growing back in? I haven't seen her scratching her eyes or shaking her head anymore. She now has bath water and loves taking baths! Should I do anything else if it looks like she is recovering from the eye thing?
Sounds like she is doing much better now! I did want to mention though, you are NOT supposed to put neosporin in the eyes of any bird/animal. You have to use an eye specific ointment like the Terramyicin ointment another poster mentioned. I always keep a tube on hand, it is very helpful stuff. I bet your little duck is doing much better just having water to wash her little head in, congrats on your new little girl!

Terramycin has been on back order at my feedstore for months...manufacturer isn't keeping up with demands or some such thing. Called my vet, and was told to use neosporin. Called another vet, same thing. Neosporin, AKA polymyxin b, also comes in the form of eye drops and eye ointments. I used it on a young drake's eye with success. Using the OTC topical is not ideal, but will work in a pinch. I have since gotten a bottle of Gentak from my vet to keep on hand, as I prefer eye drops to ointment.

QUOTE:
How does Neosporin work? What will it do for me?

Polymyxin b - neomycin compound belongs to the family of medications known as antibacterials. The compound contains a combination of antibiotics used to treat certain types of infections caused by bacteria.
The topical ointment can be used to treat some skin infections and to prevent infections in burns, minor cuts, and wounds. The drops are used to treat some types of infections of the eye and ear. The irrigating solution is used to prevent bladder infections in people who have catheters in place.
All preparations work by killing the bacteria that cause these infections.

How should I use Neosporin?

Eye and ear drops: The suggested dose is 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye or ear 2 to 4 times daily, or more frequently as directed by your doctor. Avoid contaminating the dropper by touching it with the fingers, eyes, ears, or other surfaces. Do not wear contact lenses during eye treatment.
Eye ointment: Apply a thin ribbon of ointment into the lower lid of the eye as directed by your doctor.
Irrigating solution: Your doctor or health care professional will administer the irrigating solution.
