Call Duckling Colours

Color can be hard to tell as babies, especially with a possible white parent which means her other genetics aside from white are total unknowns.

She kind of looks a bit chocolatey - possible, if Dad happens to be carrying the gene. Which he could be, if his white mom was chocolate.

If she is chocolate, is there a way she could have got the gene from her mother (who could have been the lavender splash duck)? I still don't exactly understand how sex linked genes works.

Another photo because why not!

With a recessive sex linked gene like chocolate, a copy has to come from the father for it to be able to express - either the father gives one copy to his daughters, which only need the one copy to express, OR both the mother and the father have to give a copy to the sons for it to express on a male.

Thanks for explaining it so simply. I'll keep everyone updated on how she turns out!

Out of curiosity, I'm wondering if you know how a call duck can be "self chocolate/blue/black" etc when the Black allele causes bibbing? Or what gene causes "magpie" or other colours like "splash" or pencilling?

edit: I figured out the magpie/pencilling/splash question reading an article again. But still curious on the self colours..

I believe, from what I can tell, that the self color is actually a result of the dusky gene. So ducks that are self black are also dusky, and that's what's removing the bib. That's what I've found in my research; haven't had a chance to test it myself yet.

So our Bug ended up being blue. He's a runner call cross! Oops!

And Lady, another duckling we hatched, I have no idea what colour she is but I'm leaning towards Apricot Silver. But if anyone has any clue please let me know! I'm very curious and also wondering which of my calls must have mated to make her.
