Call Ducks Finally Hatched

Nope they aren't due until next Saturday. I had couple rotten to start, some with blood rings then 9 that started developing. Since then they have been dying off one by one. Talked to someone else that got eggs from the same person and same thing happened to her eggs. No clue.

Of the 3 on day 28 today two have now externally pipped. Third is internally pipped. Hope he external pips today so I don have to worry.

My 43 bobwhites go into lockdown tonight omg

Looks like we're both going to have busy weekends :) Sorry about you little one dying but congrats on all the others

Clousert where did you find the requirements for enclosures for the birds? I am not finding anything on the website in reference to how much room they need/fencing.

Also, where did you get the bands? I need to get some for my ducks. Thanks :)

I was only talking about one egg. The veins went away on it. There was a blood ring on the small end. There was no movement within the egg. These observations led me to believe that it in fact .the chick inside was dead. I was hoping I was wrong. This morning it even more deteriorated. I have to leave for a 48 hour shift tonight. I did not want to leave it in the incubator because it might develop a crack and leek in the incubator. That happened to some chicken eggs I was hatching. It contaminated the other eggs and they all slowly died.

I wanted to find out why it died, maybe there was something to learn that would save future chicks from the same fate. I carefully made a hole in the wider end. I used a flashlight and peeked in. All I could see was the yolk and feet. It was upside down. There was no veining in the membrane. The yolk had exploded. I removed the embryo. It had begun to get stubbly down feathers, but a large amount had fallen out, It also had a lump on the top of it's head. I think it was developing a crest?? It had definitely died in the shell.

The lady who had sold me the eggs said I might get a "rare crested" I thought it was a line of bull s***. You know how some people stretch the truth when they are trying to sell something. Like political promises, "No new taxes!"

I guess she was telling the Truth.

I can hardly wait to see all the babies that are getting ready to hatch! and clousert, how did you keep That beautiful chick from dying from a broken heart, not having any siblings? Was it the "Hi I am a hoarder" thing? like you are hatching eggs every day? Hey that is a good idea! I can hatch allot of chicks now that I have 2 bators, as long as the lock down times don't conflict!!!! Anybody have eggs? Do mandarins lay year round in Sunny Florida? Or maybe East indies????  :weee

There are a lot of birds here in Florida that lay year round. I wouldn't recommend buying mandarin eggs. They are so expensive that it would make much more sense to pay the extra money for the live birds. My duck of choice (ancona) are a little pricey and I've spent tons of money on ordered hatching eggs. I've had some hatch good some hatch bad but I've still made up my mind to pay extra and order live ducklings in the spring to build up my flock.

Sounds like the chick may have broken the yolk, sometimes they will do that, I have seen some get a vein wrapped around there necks and strangle themselves, I have seen the veins get wrapped around legs causing deformaties. There's really nothing you can do with situations like that, it's just considered a "freak accident". nothing you could do on your end to prevent such acts.

Things just happen...

Not sure if you've checked into Celtic Farms but I know they sell Ancona and saw an ad recently saying they had some available now. They are in Merritt Island
