Hello Backyard Chicken Family,

My name is John and I'm out NC!

I've been around chickens my whole life, but never actually raised any on my own, so I took a dive into the shallow end of the pool. I'm looking forward to talking with my peers and learning a thing or two from you.

Thanks

The point of having chickens is not to make money usually. It is very hard to do.
I have had both friends and family criticize me over this.

I point out that there (insert one here) hobby does not make money or save money. Why would they expect my chicken hobby to make money

I’m sure you will find lots of information in the forums and articles here on BYC. The folks here are friendly and informative as well.

As far as saving money with chickens, I would say it’s possible depending on how you approach it. For me it’s just a hobby though, and I have never actually tried to calculate it. But I do enjoy knowing where a portion of my food comes from, so to me it is worth it either way. :)

Hello John,

Welcome to Backyard chickens, it is a pleasure to have you! You will meet many kind folks and make many friends here. I learned almost everything from these lovely folks about chicken-raising. Have a wonderful time and ask any questions needed! We'd be pleased to help. (Beautiful profile photo by the way! If you took the photo, you are an exquisite photographer! Feel free to take a look at my photography post under my topics started).

Now I think of chickens in two ways when it comes to the prices. Sadly, the feed is a pain to pay for... But you get eggs outta the deal and you get wonderful creatures that are so much stress relief and quite peaceful to watch and enjoy. They feed me and save me money on eggs... I might as well feed them and care for my natural food supply.

Good luck, God bless, and have a lovely evening!

Sincerely,
-The Angry Hen

:welcome hey there I am in Mossyrock, Washington State make money no but sell just enough to pay for the food have a great little garden they love when I throw them goodies from it... the overall person on here is wonderful having a ball with their choice of breeds :frow

I've never been on a forum with such a warm welcome. I think I'm going to like it in here.
I make enough money from my eggs to pay for my feed, and I don't have breeds that are great layer I have black copper Marans, white Marans and true ameraucana's. In the spring after I hatch out I let them get to 4 or 5 months old when I can tell the pullets from the cockerels then sell them for $20 a piece for the pullets. I then take the cockerels to the Amish and they can them for me. I love to sit in the run they just talk to me and eat banana and blueberry out of my hands and totally destress.
