Calling all bee keepers, is it hard to do?????

Working an apiary (bee hives) really isn't rocket science....really, the bees do all the work.
But like anything you need EDUCATION.
Head to the library and stock up on books on beekeeping.

It is a bit of manual labor because the supers (top of the hive where the bees store the honey) can weigh around 50lb.
You'll need to be able to recognize a healthy v/s a weak hive by the activity comming out the front.
Also know about diseases and pests.
and when to "re-queen" to keep them from swarming and taking you honey with them!

Don't wear black, It triggers the "bear black nose" response and they will attack the color.

After a while You'll be able to know when you can just walk up, open the hive and take a look around without any protective equipment at all!!!
but there are times when I wouldn't go near a hive. That takes experiance.
It can be great fun as well as a pain in the neck. Depends on your temperment and patience.

We have two hives, and the bees are really fascinating. Our best learning experiences have come from talking to the local beekeepers. There's an active club in our area, and most of the members will go out of their way to teach prospective beekeepers everything they need to know.

If you have a local club, attend a couple of meetings. You'll get all of the information and connections you could ever need.

This is something I am interested in once we get moved and have enough area. There are a couple places around here that actually offer classes, so will be sure to take those!
