Well i have a cross breed in mind that i want to start. Basicly i want the beautiful spangel's that you see on MFD Hen's to cross over onto another chicken. I won't tell you what one tho...it's a surprise!

Basicly i want to know everything there is to know about MFD's. I allready know a little bit, the OEGB kind, bearded/no-bearded, the white porcelain kind, etc.... But mostly i want to know about how/when they breed..or when is the best time for them to breed. Are they good broody?? Since i want the spangel effect to be very dominant in the cross...should the MFD hen be the mother of the cross babbies...or will the MFD rooster carry the trait over MORE dominantly as well??The eggs i bought to hatch "from pamperedpoultry" here on BYC will all be brothers and sister i know. The first thing that comes to mind is to bring NEW BLOOD into my MFD breeding project. Inbreeding is something i want to stay away from...but then i was told somewhere that it was "good" to breed back into the parent's line??? Long story short "depending on what advice im givein on here" im in the market for buying/tradeing for a good strong bearded roo or a pair of bearded MFD hen's. I trust you all here on the forum, i know you guys would not lead me astray

Im a little currious to when they get their "full" spangel coat of feathers?? I was told after one year...then i was told after their first molt. How long does it "really" take tho?? Also i know genetics take into play as well. Sadly, the seller of the eggs that i just hatched yesterday "7 of them" told me she bough the daddy rooster and mamma hen's all together when they were laying. So that leads me to believe they are all siblings..which means insest...which means not so good quality MFD'S..which also means little to no spangel affect. These are possibly the only MFD'S i will be able to get before winter comes so i guess im stuck with these "tainted" babies, but i love them all any way

So....am i wrong about my theory above?? I live in East Central Indiana and would love to tap into my nearist's MFD vain. I have a friend on here "Schultz" that has a mini flock of them...but i have no clue where she got them from and if they are "pure" or not?? I want to make a quality cross..and inbreed chick's will not cut it with me. "Attack Chicken" has some roo's she want's to sell..but they are non-bearded..and im looking for the bearded kind.

I've seen BEAUTIFUL!!!! MFD hen's that just took my breath away...and ive seen MFD hen's that have next to no Spangel'ing at all. I understand that the rooster's do not have as much spangel'ing as the hen's do..but i have seen some VERY pretty roo's before. So i think that about cover's it. If i think of more i will edit this post and add on as time goes. I really hope to hear from ALOT of you. Im very excited about my MFD project...and even more excited to learn from all of you. Thanks again!

Kory

I don't know whether this will help. There are a lot of people breeding/developing mille fleur cochins. They have a special thread which you would probably find using the search feature. Between them they will have gained quite a bit of knowledge about this colour pattern which would probably be applicable to your project.

Hey, I have 2 bearded cockerals for FREE if you're coming to NY anytime soon. Perhaps a trip to the Adirondacks is in your future....

Heck, I might even be persuaded to sell you my whole young flock.

Hmm... im no expert but i would think a MFL roo would cross over traits better than the hen.. but i have a porcelain d'uccle bantam pair and the roo has never once tried to mate so you may have a problem. but that might just be my luck...
